Mine didn't hurt at all, that I remember. I think I was so excited about getting a tattoo that the adrenaline overrode any serious discomfort. And I've heard from many different sources that women handle the pain of getting tattoos better than men.

I think the only problem I had was it was right at the same level as the waistband of my jeans, so I had issues keeping the patch stuck on. It was a bit weird to peel purple skin as it was healing, though.

Mine hurt like hell... not sure how much hell hurts, but that gave me an idea. It's just below the pelvis bone, I think it is.

Mine's right on the tip of my pelvis bone in the front. Maybe the men/women difference accounts for a lot. re: Who has tattoos?

The tattoo on my back--my shamrock--is directly on my spine. It hurt so bad that I actually shed a few small tears during the process. The tattoo artist went so deep that it bled.

My other two were so painless that I could've taken a nap while I was getting them.

I have 3. A dolphin on my right inside ankle, a unicorn on my right outer ankle, and the drama masks surrounded by musical notes on my left shoulder. The drama masks are my favorite.

None of them hurt that much, but the unicorn is pretty big so it took like 2 1/2 hours, and after a while that was painful. It also hurt when he hit my ankle bone. But the dolphin and the drama masks were nothing.

The sad thing is, I thought the dolphin (my first) would be it. But tats are highly addictive. I want a fourth, but I refise to be one of those giels COVERED in tattoos.

GClef-

The tattoo on my back is the only one I have that bled. I assumed it was because it was in a more sensitive spot.

Ahh I love tattoos! They really are addictive. My first one says "let love in" on my left wrist, and my second one is a tree (very similar to/it is the one on Faramir's armor in the LOTR movies....yes, I am in fact a huge nerd...) on my left side/ribcage. The first one didn't hurt, the second hurt REALLY badly...I was very shaky/probably a little bit in shock after I got it. It's also fairly big, though, so it took much longer than my first did. midnightdolphin, what's your next one going to be/did the ones behind your ears hurt very badly? I'm thinking if I get another I might get one there.

I want a theatre-related tattoo someday. I just don't know where to put it.

I've never been a huge fan of tattoos; the coloring always seems to lean towards the green side and the idea of permanence just makes me uneasy. However, that blacklight/UV tattoo is appealing. Made me rethink my stance.

I love tattoos. I have way too many to count and I'm too lazy to type them all out, but my left arm is completely sleeved. My right arm is almost finished. I just started my back piece and I have 5 on my legs.

I have too many to count too. But I stick to certain areas that are not always visable to everyone...inner arms, back of my neck, back, below panty line, and I only do black ink, never colors. Most are Asian themed, a lot of Japanese woodblock styles and Chinese characters, but I have a few things here and there written in Old English, and some outlined stars for good measure. Oh, and let me just say that I did get my stars done before they became the trashy celeb tattoo of choice. So there, lol...

It's a goal of mine to get a full sleeve on my left arm but I'm not sure if I will ever be able to do it. The insides of both my right and left arms are completely tatted down to my wrists, and yeah, I know it's pretty much a given that because of that I will never EVER be able to find a 'normal' job, lol, but a full sleeve just takes it to another level and I'm not sure if I can commit to it at the moment. I would like to one day though.

By the way for the person that asked above, all mine have bled. It's the shading and coloring in from the filler needle that really does it. The biggest bleeders for me (and the most painful) were the ones on sensitive areas, ie inner arms, below panty line, neck. Ugggh.

I want to get tattoos of Edie Beale and Edie Sedgwick.

I think they would have liked each other.

I was interested in getting one, but I can't think of anything that I like enough to have on my body forever.

I was thinking of getting the logo to "Sunday In The Park With George" on my bicep (or thats where it would be if I actually had biceps). I love the show and it's a cool logo.

But then I met a guy who had the logo of "Aspects of Love" on his bicep and I had to rethink it. I'm not sure if it's just because it's a show I loathe, or if I realized that it's just not a good idea.

"I know it's pretty much a given that because of that I will never EVER be able to find a 'normal' job"

Obviously it depends on the company and field, but I have actually seen many people become successful who are pretty tattooed. You just might be wearing long sleeve shirts most of the time! My one friend has both sleeves, full chest and back tattoos and is a high school teacher. He just wears long sleeve shirts to work. The kids and teachers all know he has them, but he is respectful about it.

I don't have any tattoos right now, but I kind of want one. I used to want ones of my favorite cartoon characters, but then I realized that I would probably hate them within a few years of getting them. Now I'm considering getting a peace dove outlined in black on my shoulder blade. It's not as flashy and pretty, but it would look a lot less tacky and it would still retain its meaning to me many years later. My personal ideologies are a lot less likely to change than my love for Snoopy or Kamineko or whatever.

jessica, the next one's gonna be one for my grandparents. i think my mom and my sister are gonna get it too. it'll be a family thing. and the ones behind my ear hurt the least surprisingly enough.

and just to add my two cents... i think tattoos are extremely hot on guys. my boyfriend has a half sleeve that goes onto his chest and back as well as other tats, and they're just... sexy. that's all there is to it.

Oh, I don't think they will keep me from being successful in the field that I plan on being in, but just in case I do get fired one day, I'm pretty sure that my backup job won't be in like, human relations or accounting. I'm pretty sure they'll keep me from becoming a broadway star too. Darn.

I wear long sleeves and turtlenecks when I go home to visit my Mom. Doesn't keep her from crying for me though. I have a lotus on my left arm with 'M O M' on the petals, and after I had it done I was like, 'Mommy, look, it's for you!', and she looked at it for about 10 seconds and then went to the kitchen and cried. Mwah.

My sis-in-law has a beautiful vine that wraps around her left arm and then down her side. Each leaf has a different animal on it. It is amazing. But she is getting married and everyone is giving her problems about it, like cover it with make up or wear a long sleeve dress. But it's not like no one knows she has the tattoo. Everyone knows, she's had it for 10 years. It's tasteful and it's her. She shouldn't have to hide it to make "pretty wedding pictures".

touchmeinthemorning- wow, we have a similar tattoo...

re: Who has tattoos?

It wasn't flash or anything, it was something I came up with to signify my favorite quote "Music saved my life, and Jesus saved my soul". It sums me up in one tattoo pretty much. It's on my inside left ankle. This was taken immediately after he finished. The red around it is shading that has now faded to a grayish color- so the colors don't clash anymore like in the picture.

(I apologize for the large picture)

My other tattoo is extremely special to me. It's on my left wrist and is in memory of my mother who passed away 4 1/2 years ago. It's a ladybug (my family's little 'symbol' for my Mom - long story) on a blue flower. It says "You are home" which is a lyric from my favorite band- New Found Glory. Their song "When I Die" is about the death of the guitarist's father. He's saying he's accepted the loss of his dad and he's not scared to die himself because he'll be reunited with his father - "When I Die/ I'll be fine/ 'Cause I know/ You'll be there/ You are home". I feel the same way.

Revolutionary-- you shouldn't have a problem finding a 'normal' job if you want one. I have partial sleeves, and I've worked in corporate America and no one even knew I had tattoos for the first year. It was only at a company picnic, when I decided to let loose and wear a t-shirt, that my bosses realized I had tattoos at which point they said, feel free to wear short sleeve shirts to work, which as a woman, was a huge relief because there were so many cute shirts wasting away in my closet. Now, I'm in a Ph.D. program, I teach and my students see my tattoos and don't really think anything of it. When I interview for faculty positions in two years, I'll wear long sleeve shirts for that process but I still don't foresee it being a problem. So this is a long-winded way of saying that there are ways to have the tattoos you want while functioning in the 'real' world.
