I'm sitting here waiting for X-Men to start and there's three groups of straight guys each sitting one seat apart from each other. I see this all the time so wondering if any of you straighties here can tell me why. Do you think it's gay to sit next to each other?

You should thank them, for doing what you only wish you could do in this lifetime.
Jordan, it's totally the "I'm not gay" thing. It took four years to convince my brother to actually sit next to me at the movies because he was afraid people would think we were a gay couple. Guess what? No one has ever given us any indication they thought that even though we look nothing like each other and share snacks during the movie. Shocker. People don't go to the movies just to go people watching. That's what the park is for.
trentsketch, I think your brother might be gay.
That would be the shock of the century, Bettyboy. The reality is he hung out with a whole lot of homophobic people in high school and had to be reprogrammed afterwards to be a compassionate human being.
We've called it the "I'm not gay" seat for years.
Jordan, it is definitely the "We're not gay!" seating arrangement.
I also hate when straight guys are so territorial about their genre films that they are shocked, SHOCKED if any girl pays to go see a movie that is not a chick flick. I seriously considered clocking a guy who decided to walk up to me before Watchmen saying 'What are you doing here? This is a guy movie!' I just gave him an eye-roll and the finger. When the worst sex scene in cinema history happened during the film I could hear the dude tell his 'buddy' (but it was practically directed at me) in a non-whisper, 'I told you it was a guy film!'

They leave that empty seat hoping a gay guy will sit between them and give them both handjobs. Feel free.
Is this a recent phenomenon? Growing up in the 70s, I went to the movies with other guys all the time, and we never left an empty seat. Were we gay?
None of my male friends do it. When my ex and his best friend would go to movies, they'd sit next to each other. And if they did sit a seat apart it was more for the extra room. I, myself, don't mind having a seat open next to me.
A woman asked if the seat next to one of them was taken and they looked so sad when she sat between them.
They might develop feelings for each other if they sit in such close vicinity to each other?

I don't think I've actually witnessed this phenomenon. And my straight friends have never put a seat between us unless we were actively saving it for a third person.
