But DD, and I say this with love, you still don't know how to spell them...
Although, I'll be shot for my British ways on an American site...
You won't be shot though otherwise punish-ed, dear Doxy.
And our cars also drive on tires, not tyres.
Firstly, a yard is 36 inches.
Paradox_error as you know in Australia we use the metric system. How this happened was that Britain in the early 1970's announced it was going metric so naturally Australia followed, however halfway into the transition Britain changed its mind but it was too late for Australia which was well advanced into the changeover. My early school years were devoted to learning the British Imperial System, then we were told to forget that learn the metric system. That is why in Australia today there is a whole generation who will say in one sentence that someone is 5'10" tall and in the next sentence say something is about 20 metres away. We are still confused!
Ego, I'm just about to turn 19, and I still say I'm 6'1"...
But we only use it in referring to height...

Alterego, I thought England did convert to metric, for the most part. I know people refer to their weights in both stones and kilograms. (Neither of which give me much of a plane of reference, but what the hey.
