For our bridal shower, those throwing the shower asked for cash for us, since shipping gifts over would be difficult. For our wedding, however, it was just the two of us and it was perfect.
I'm soooooo sick of being asked to pay for people's s@#t. This is beginning to annoy me. I love supporting art and artists, but even all the Broadway actors and musicians with their hand out is really offputting.
It is becoming the norm and its getting way to expensive for me as a fan. So let me see, I can sponsor your album for $30 to get a signed copy or just wait and buy it for $10. I am going to start to wait now. All these little campaigns, which were cute at first, are starting to add up!
Donating can be addictive. I once knew a guy who started a page to raise money so he could continue to donate under his own name.
I wonder where the blushing groom and groom are registered.

I can't find it now but I got a notification of a Kickstarter a while back where the top premium offered was to sit in on a game of strip poker with the band.
This is the TACKIEST thing I have ever seen!
And, the single mom sob story is really insulting.
Shame, shame, shame.
Well that's a lot better than a $25 personalized haiku!
I know fifth graders
Who would be very willing
To do that for less
Ya gotta be friggin kidding. The cost of a marriage license in NY is $35.
If they had a pair of balls between the two of them they would discretely resolve their self-made dilemma instead of taking this whiney-assed public approach.
Do parents still pay for weddings? lol
I'd rather give Jeffery Self a whole set of porcelain veneers than give one cent to that tacky Gimme Gimme Campaign.
I know SEVERAL couples who would love nothing more than to have a wedding as lavish as Liza Minnelli's who are putting money aside so they can afford their own more modest version.
But to launch an Internet campaign to solicit money from their friends and strangers? Shame on you, Jamie McBenefit!

But, but...Jose - you don't understand. It's a DESTINATION wedding! They are asking for transportation and accomodation funds in addition to the usual expenses. I mean, they HAVE to travel out of town. It's not like they can legally marry in Washington, DC, where they live.
Oh...wait....

I agree, addy. I can't even fathom that they have donations totaling $1,381 already.
"Just between us... we're doing this because there was a time in both of our lives (roughly from birth to young adulthood) where we never thought we'd be able to be this happy, have the life that we have now, and live in a world that accepts us fully and honestly. We're doing this to honor our ten-year-old selves and everything we never dared dream we might one day have."
"•A wedding of two dudes is unavoidably a political statement. We acknowledge this and are not shying away from it.
•We intend to make the most positive statement we possibly can by demonstrating our commiment to each other in front of our loved ones. "
Just ugh. So really the implication is it'll be like you're supporting a gay rights charity! I know it's different in Canada, where gays have been able to get married all over the country for a while now, but how long can you milk this as making a political statement? Really, anyone donating who doesn't know them would be better off donating to political and charitable causes that are pushing for more legalized gay marriage in the US. I'd actually rather pay for someone to get into some ****ty college than for this, apparently, not even slightly extravagant wedding. (And while they claim to both have not-for-profit jobsm, or whatever, they also say that Jamie works as a voice actor, it's not like they couldn't just save for this extremely modest wedding).
As for the single moms thing--yes a lot of parents of people getting married at least help out with the wedding--but a lot don't if they can't afford it. That seems in especially poor taste.
You're all invited to come have drinks with me and my fiance after we tie the knot in June for free.

Oh, Sueleen, don't give it away for free.
Consider it my donation to the cause, Mooney.
The "dudes" reference is especially grating.

I believe all actions are political. I do agree that two men having a wedding is inherently political in this country. But crowd sourcing a "modest" wedding for 10 grand is also political, like, SuperPAC political.
I see your point--I guess it's just that being added as a reason why you should pay for their wedding ("because it'll show you support gay rights" basically is the gist) is particularly grating to me.

To me, that part reminds me of Ryan Murphy equating Dave Grohl not authorizing Glee to use the music of the Foo Fighters as actively supporting the bullying of gay high schoolers.
Wow, the things I miss

Jamie does voices for a lot of Japanese anime - including Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh and dozens of others.
I did not know that Japanese anime was "non-profit." I am not a professional, but doesn't voice over work pay really, really well? And if he is doing "a lot" of it, why is it he can't save $10,000 in the year before their political statement wedding?

I'm sure the move to DC was not cheap.
Speaking of cheap, aren't kilt-wearing Scotsmen notoriously, um, frugal? And isn't the whole appeal written in Sean's voice? Maybe Jamie is wisely keeping his Pokemon money out of this.
In any event, I hope Sean's vow is, "Jamie! I choose youuuuuuuu!"
^ Ha!
But, yeah, voice overs generally pay well- plus, stuff like that gets residuals. Not, like, rolling-in-dough pays well, but more than a living wage.
I think kickstarter, etc. are generally good things, enabling projects that wouldn't easily get off the ground and creating interest in them at the same time. But then, we've got people deciding they want something for themselves and spinning it so it doesn't seem entirely like a cash grab.
