Anyone seen the trailer for his latest flick, Match Point?

It was the most well reviewed movie of the Cannes Film Festival, with many saying that it probably would have won the Palme D'or if it were playing in competition.

Now you get to judge for youself:

Looks like something he hasn't even attempted to do before. I cannot wait for this.

The "directed by woody allen" tag is like a shocker...

It looks fascinating and so out of character for Woody Allen. Melinda and Melinda looks like more his style, but I never noticed it playing anywhere. Did anyone see it? Looks like he finally came out of his slump. He only had a couple of decent films in the last 10 years and the last one was Sweet and Lowdown in 1999.

The reveal of the director at the end is downright startling, and I knew from the start it was Allen. He's always wanted to a Big Serious Filmmaker instead of "just" a comedy director. Maybe he's finally succeeded.

The last Woody film I saw was HOLLYWOOD ENDING - which was absolutely dreadful.

The last Woody film I liked was SMALL TIME CRIMINALS.

I am seriously beside myself for this. I watched the trailer online and when I saw it was a Woody film, I almost didn't bother to watch it. But I am SO glad I did. It looks brilliant and Scarlett Johanssen looks like she's going to be brilliant. The moment when she says "if you don't have the nerve to do it, I'll do it" gave me chills.

Oh boy, when I first clicked onthe link, for some reason it toook me to the trailer for another Woody Allen film, MELINDA and MELINDA. I sat there thinking to myself, this is a comedy and it looks like every other Woody Allen film.

Now I'm re-reading this thread and I realize the movie you guys are talking about is MATCH POINT. I have no idea why that link initially took me to the MELINDA and MELINDA trailer.

Sorry about that. I think I need some sleep. . .

It looks good but it reminded me a little of FATAL ATTRACTION. Married man gets involved in extra marital affair and it all goes awry...

Melinda and Melinda was...ok...but not anything particularly special.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how this one turns out.

Looks great, but then again, anything he does is great. EVEN the newer ones, which are obviously nowhere near his best, but still terrific films. I look forward to this movie especially because it is one of the few films he has had his own positive feedback on.

Woody is my absolute hero of all time, hands down. A serious film need not be a drama, you know. Manhattan is easily one of the best films of the 1970s, if not THE best. But it's a drammer you're looking for, try Crimes and Misdemeanors (which Match Point seems to echo at least thematically) or September, featuring some of the best performances I've seen in a while, especially from Stritchie and Denholm Elliott.

I'm thrilled to see one of his films receiving so much positive PR.

The Soon-Yi thing bothered me at first, until I saw Wild Man Blues and saw what she was really like: she's just like Tracy in Manhattan or Rain in Husbands and Wives...an articulate and sophisticated young woman, although she was born in poverty and squalor and was a child prostitute...a long way from the Upper East Side.

We just re-watched Annie Hall and Manhattan. Perfection. Sheer perfection.

a friend of mine saw it in the movie theater and said there was a collective intake of breath when it came up "A Woody Allen Film".

Whether Soon-Yi is a Rhodes scholar or completely dumb is not the point, at least for me, lil. It's the fact that she was his STEPDAUGHTER and he was HAVING SEX with her. That is not ok.

I am a huge fan of Woody Allen's. I just can't stand what he did. I separate his personal and professional life in order to enjoy his movies, which truly are beautiful.

Manhattan has probably the best cinematography since Citizen Kane. Gordon Willis is a genius, if only for the opening sequence which always makes me tear up, the scene overlooking the bridge on a foggy night, and the scene in the planetarium.

And how many romantic comedies owe a debt to Annie Hall? Of course, they also owe a great deal to The Awful Truth and The Palm Beach Story as well.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers...*drool* I was absolutely stunned when I found out who had directed this movie. As long as he's not in it...

Well, I'll tell you something Sorry, I'm not in a position to judge. That's hard to do when you're in a sling...lots of people can't stand what I do, either.

I agree with you, lil. There are times that I am too judgmental. However, the hard facts are that he still had sex with his stepdaughter while he was married to her mother. But, since I like you, I'll agree to disagree on that point. re: Woody Allen...It Seems...Has Returned...

I'm not saying you're wrong, Sorry, I like you too, and there's no need to argue about what someone neither of us knows does in his personal life.

Although when i say things like this, I'm sure an enterprising and extremely bored reporter could find a post where I contradict myself. Call me Walt! I've been called worse...

Aren't we the mature adults today? If we were some others on the board, we'd be bitch-slapping each other by now. Sigh. I've always wanted to bitch-slap someone.
