A wonderful score by Ennio Morricone too. It's widely believed the score would have won the oscar for best soundtrack if the Ladd Company hadn't forgotten to enter it in the first place...

I'm glad several of you are mentioning Katharine Hepburn in "Alice Adams."
I'd forgotten about that one, but I agree with you! She manages to break your heart and make you laugh at her, all at the same time. The nuances are astounding.
Talk about being "tragically beautiful." It might even be my favorite of all her (many) outstanding film performances.
