ProActiv didn't work for me at all.
Retina-Micro works pretty well. I also use St. Ives Apricot Blemish-Fighting Scrub twice a day. That's been helping a lot.
Toothpaste works as well. Strange but true.
That new Zeno zapper device looks pretty nifty, but I talked to a friend who has it, and she says that it only works if the pimple is ready to be popped anyway. Which might help for a lot of people.

Posted: 7/27/06 at 11:35pmI was at the beach last week and used sunscreen. I developed the worst case of acne. (I am not a teenager) I used an over the counter cream and it helped.

Clean and Clear Persa-Gel 10

I tried different acne treatments for about 2 years, before finally finding success with Accutane. I first tried Proactiv, which did nto work for me. I then talked to my doctor about options, and he placed me on an antibiotic( I forget which one), which did not work. I then went to a dermatologist, where I tried Bactrim, in addition to Differin(a topical, which cleared my skin a little, but not significantly.
Accutane was always the last resort, since I have always had high cholesterol(genetic), and Accutane raises cholesterol. My dermatologist suggested a new treatmet called Clearlight ALA. It provided great results, but only for the week after each treatment. Finally, we decided upon Accutane. I have had no problems since.
ETA- My dermatologist's office used me as their test subject on the news. This is from last year.

Posted: 7/28/06 at 12:13amI know there is a new drug coming out in about 3 months that my dermatoligist told me about (I am currently on Bactrum which kinda helps but not as much as it should). I don't remember the name...but she said it works really well (and can help prevent breast cancer!)

Posted: 8/10/06 at 11:17amI got some Visine. Could someone who has used it on skin tell me how to apply it (I was just going to use the dropper and hope it lands in the right place) and how much to use?

Never ever put alcohol on any blemish or sore...it kills skin cells which will promote scarring.

Posted: 8/10/06 at 1:27pmI had horrible acne as a teen, and tried everything!!! and I mean everything. even shots in my face to try to reduce the amount. nothing worked until accutane for me. but it really worked, and while I do have some slight scars on my face, they have cleared up quite well, and I haven't really had a problem, save but a few minor blemishes every now and then.

Posted: 8/11/06 at 9:31pmSo I hardly ever get bad acne, but recently I've had a continous breakout on my chin. I've been using Pro Activ, and it's helping a little but not to the full extent. My doctor prescribed me Doxycycline, an antibiotic. I was wondering if anyone else has taken this and if so if it has helped at all? Also, any tips or anything would be appreciated.

Posted: 8/11/06 at 10:27pmI always had clear skin as a teenager and young adult. Then my skin broke out and I went to the doctor and said, "What is this???" and "Get it off my face!!!" He said I had adult acne and prescribed tetracyline. I only used it a few months, and the acne went away and never came back.

Emcee-- Don't put Visine on your face!!!! Seriously, it won't really help (I've tried..) and it *can't* be good. If you have any redness it will fade eventually. Wear makeup in the meantime.

jlc, I used to take doxycycline in conjunction with clindamycin cream, but this unfortunately didn't work for me. Hopefully you'll have better results!
As for getting rid of those ridiculously stubborn blackheads and shrinking pores, there's an amazing mint julep mask by Queen Helene. It's all tingly and it smells pretty good too, and the great thing: it can be left on all night to work on especially stubborn areas. I absolutely cannot live without this stuff, lol. I buy it at the local Sally Beauty store, but I'm sure you can find it online too.
I used to have pretty severe breakouts, but for the past year or so my skin has stayed clear since switching to this regimen:
I use the Patricia Wexler system for cleansing. It isn't made especially for acne, but it is very gentle and really improves the texture of your skin. It comes with cleanser/makeup remover, a microderma-yadablahblah thingie that works really well, a skin-correcting serum, a heavy and a light moisturizer so you can figure out which works for you, and an eye cream.
In addition, I use the Queen Helene mint julep scrub every morning in the shower, unless my skin feels aggravated.
I also use the mint julep mask every night. I leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse. Then I reapply it to any trouble spots and leave on overnight.
I also drink lots of water, use rice paper sheets throughout the day to blot up excess oil, and if I do break out, I use a qtip to dab tee tree oil on the breakout a few times a day. Also, take vitamin E and echinacea (which not only gets rid of breakout causing bacteria, but helps knock out colds too). I think that's everything... hope some of these tips help someone!

Not personally, but my Aunt, who is a weight/nutrition counselor, is always very concerned with her appearance. Well, I mean her job depends on it. People go to her because they want to look like her, right?
She suffers from adult acne, and she's done some pretty crazy stuff. Like, getting freaky chemicals I couldn't even begin to spell injected into her face and stuff. Right now she's on accutane and it seems to be working.
I don't think I would ever go to that sort of extreme just for my appearnace... it wouldn't be worth it to end up looking like Joan Rivers or something!

Your aunt looks like Joan Rivers? :)
At her age?
So do these "freaky chemicals" work for her?

Thank God for this thread. I just started Acnefree on Monday and even after dutifully doing all three steps and not over-doing it, my face has gotten WORSE! New zits have sprung on my cheek and my chin - those deep under-the-skin buggers that hurt to touch and are impossible to pop.
By the way, toothpaste only works in drying out the surface skin, not actually eliminating the zit. But once you pick that skin off and pop the sucker, it's oh so satisfying...

I'm allergic to Proactiv, and Tetracyclene didn't work except to make my hair thin...but you know what worked?
This, surprisingly enough.

I am 13, my acne is horrible. It's EVERYWHERE on my face. I have tried: Tetracyclene , Proactiv, retna, antibiotics, facial scrubs, clearacil and everything with bonzyol peroxide.
And nothing is working! BTW: sorry for all of the spelling mistakes, I can't spell today. My dermatologist told me about ACCUTANE. I refuse to take it. It makes people get moody (I already am the moodiest person ever) and this pill will just make it worse.
Someone help meee!!!

Posted: 8/12/06 at 6:56pmVisit your MD and check out the new meds. that are available. My daughters Doc gave her a cream that contains toical antibiotic combined with bezoyl peroxide. It must be kept in the 'fridge but the stuff really works and isn't expensive, since it also comes in generic form. You need to make sure that you have white pillowcases though as it will bleach the color out of any fabric it comes in contact with! I like the fact that she doen't have to swallow an antibiotic and only has to use it when needed. Good luck!
re: acne treatments#124
Posted: 8/13/06 at 2:40amThe best way to care for acne-ridden skin is to be GENTLE. Pick a gentle face wash that removes make-up and dirt (Cetaphil is a great brand). Then use a spot treatment with benzol peroxide. Gently rub the benzol peroxide on your skin until it is completely absorbed. Wait for it to try, and moisturize. Yes, MOISTURIZE. When you completely dry out your skin with a myriad of scrubs, harsh cleansers and toners, your skin starts to produce more oil. If you use an oil-free moisturizer, you won't break out. Also, remember to exfoliate gently at least once a week. Don't use scrubs with harsh nuts or seeds or whatever. Another thing that might work? Tea tree oil. Apply it on trouble spots with a Q-tip.
