acne treatments

siamese and sandy, I'll definitely look into those. It's not greaseball-oily, but when I obsess about it my face feels sticky.
I have a few stubborn blackheads on my nose. They're not terribly obtrusive, but I hate them. Do those pore-clearing strips not work for anyone else?

I hate them as well. I'm unfortunately very self-conscious when it comes to my skin.
They don't work for me, either. They just manage to make my nose very red and irritated.
I've tried microdermabrasion on my nose as well. It was insanely expensive and didn't do a thing. Anyone have any other blackhead removal advice?

Posted: 4/7/06 at 9:43pmHow about cleansers, rather than spot-treatment for the blackheads? Those strips sure as hell don't work. Wouldn't that get to the problem better?

Well, I have no idea which one, but the idea sounds more logical, I guess.
I dunno. My skin makes me crazy. Something will work for a while, then just quit.
re: acne treatments#56
Posted: 4/7/06 at 9:46pmI've never tried this, but I heard once that you can put Visine on red zits to get rid of that Rudolph the Red Nosed-Reindeer look. Apparently the anti-inflammatory substance works on the capillaries in your skin as well as the veins in your eyes.
re: acne treatments#57
Posted: 4/7/06 at 9:48pmBut pimles are still a bacterial issue (right?), so even if you can get the swelling in the capillaries to go away, that's not going to eliminate the problem.
re: acne treatments#58
Posted: 4/7/06 at 9:49pmNo, it doesn't eliminate the problem, but sometimes you need a quick fix to get rid of the BRIGHT RED!

I agree, Em. I just wish I could get something to work. I hope you find something that works for you as well. You mentioned once that you tried Proactiv, right? I used it for a while and my skin has really improved since then, although I'm not sure if it was due to the Proactiv or "growing out of" that phase.

Really? I've heard toothpaste. Heh. Thankfully, I haven't been plagued by the red variety of pimples lately -- only blackheads and whiteheads!
Talking about this sort of stuff really ruined my appetite!
re: acne treatments#60
Posted: 4/7/06 at 9:50pmRight. They are little infections, but if you need to be somewhere in five minutes and you don't like the redness, you can get rid of it.

Most people I know who have significant skin problems ultimately resort to the oral medications. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to every. single. one.
I tried Proactiv and it worked for like two days. I don't know if it's that stuff doesn't work, or that the problem with my skin is cylical. Bleh.

Posted: 4/7/06 at 9:53pmAntibiotics KILL my stomach and there's no way I'm taking Accutane or something that strong for a some stubborn blackheads in my nose. Sorry to hear oral meds don't work for you, either.

The thing with oral medications and topical anti-bacterial stuff is that it only kills some of the bacteria. There will always be a few strains that are immune, and when you wipe out the non-immune ones, there's just more room for the other types to proliforate.
Sorry to be even more gross, siamese, but whiteheads are fun. There's something very satisfying about squeezing one out.

So true, nia! It's one of those bad-for-you-but-feels-so-good things, squeezing and popping...
My sister recently went on birth control pills for her acne. It seems to be working! She had some sort of cream that bleached her pillowcases and stung like crazy, but it stopped doing anything for her.

oooh, but it's SO bad for you. Not that I don't do it.
I did once try an antibiotic, but it wasn't one that was *truly* for acne. It was just like a cure-all antibiotic that would probably do something.
It did not.
The pill works for a lot of people, but I can't take that, either.
ETA -- there are things you can do to prevent stomach-related side effects from most antibiotics. There's a vitamin called Acidophilus that replaces the live cultures in your body killed by some of the stronger antibiotics. I usually find that eating a lot of bread and things that are easy on your stomach helps, too.

Visine:
Applying Visine or Clear Eyes et cetera to a zit in order to "get the red out" is an artform and should not be approached lightly. Trust me. If you put on too much (even when you think you haven't), all you end up with is a halo of lighter skin around a red zit, or even worse, a light "tear stain" streak down your face where the Visine succumbed to gravity. I really don't recommend it unless you are a girl who is going to apply makeup, but if you are putting on makeup anyway... ?
I think Visine-type products are great for applying all over your face when you have product burn. I know it sounds decadent, squirting that tiny tube of Visine all over your face, but believe me, when your acne products or overzealous scrubbing have left you red as a beet, this is a great quick fix. I let it dry, then apply a thin layer of Cortaid cream (NOT ointment) over my face, and promise myself that I'll never be so rough on my skin again.
Toothpaste:
DON'T!!! Don't do it! Let me just say that I know this stuff because as an acneic teen actor I went nuts and tried just about everything I ever read about acne "cures". I tried dabbing Crest on my zits as one article suggested, and I woke up looking like someone took a curling iron dipped in acid to my face. Just think about it, you know how your mouth sometimes starts to burn when you're running around the house trying to do a milllion things while brushing your teeth, and the next thing you know you've had that toothbrush in your mouth for 20 minutes? Maybe that's just me. But toothpaste will burn your skin, it will look REALLY bad, believe me, I had to go to school the next day. Try explaining THAT one.
Rapid Clear, Mario Badescu and others sell those pink sulfur solutions, you know the ones, with what looks like alcohol on top, pink sulfur settled on the bottom. You don't shake them up, and you dip a cotton swab to the bottom and apply that to the pimple. I swear by those for spot treatment. They may leave you a little red on the spot, but it's worth it, because you'll wake up the next morning and see and feel that your zit has shrunk dramatically.

Visine TOTALLY works! Wow. My advice: squirt a couple of drops onto a Q-Tip and dab it onto the red spot. Of course, the red doesn't vanish completely, but it tones it down quite a bit. Most likely enough that you could cover it with make-up. I know my foundation (applied with a new sponge every day, don't forget!!) doesn't completely cover the red.
OH! Something I swear by to help get rid of zits. Penaten cream. You know, that stuff in the blue tin, used for diaper rashes? I slather it on whenever I get a break-out.

re: acne treatments#71
Posted: 4/22/06 at 6:17pmALCOHOL IS BAAAD. From acne.com: "If you use a toner, avoid products with high concentrations of isopropyl alcohol, or common rubbing alcohol. A strong astringent, alcohol strips the top layer of your skin, causing your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. The result? Dry, red skin — and possibly more blemishes."

just be careful... i did that once and some of the rubbing alcohol got on my chapped lips. OW!
edit: it always works for me
