I'm sure these are obvious questions to ask, but I think they should be asked.
Regardless of its quality, how do you think people will react to the fact of "Brokeback Mountain?" Will it inspire editorials and backlash and more of those endless circular debates over whether gay people should be treated like humans? Will Bushian politicians try to write it off as just a bad movie? Will people picket theatres?
I know I may be expecting too much of a movie to change the world. Do you think this film will do well, commercially, and inspire the kind of water-cooler chat that probably causes more social change than politicians do? Or will it just be ignored and laughed at and used for yet another example of how "gay" movies are sure money-losers?

I showed a bunch of girls the trailer last night, and they are chaffing at the bit to see it.
It's not just a gay film, and I think because of that, it'll do well...

Posted: 11/13/05 at 12:08pmI think there will be huge discussion and controversy over this film. And, that will only boost box office. It looks like a stunning film---I hope it does change minds and hearts.

I am not sure how this movie will do, but I hope it will do well. It's the kind of movie that shows love in it's many forms and I really hope it will break down some walls and change the ignorant.
Sadly I know that there are protests planned outside of thatres that will be playing the movie.

Posted: 11/13/05 at 12:25pmAwesome! Protests will make people want to see what all the fuss is. And, the way things are moving, I think people who protest gays are going to slide into the minority. I like to think that people are starting to see how ridiculous it is to be obsessed with gay people. Especially with all of the real problems in the world.

The movie will obviously do well - there's no denying that.
Why do you people think that there will be protestors for this movie, any more than there will/won't be for others? Especially the RENT movie.

People are already pissed off at their being gay cowboys because "there are no gay cowboys" and how dare the liberal left attack middle American family values with such assertions! lol
It's gonna rock a few boats.

Posted: 11/13/05 at 12:35pmAndy Warhol did a gay cowboy movie in the 70's called Lonesome Cowboys and one review commented on the naturalness of the set up. Let me see if I can find the exact quote somewhere.

Posted: 11/13/05 at 12:36pmCowboys are too manly of course, they can't be...gay! Would anyone other than a real man wear pants with the ass cut out? I think not. Chaps=Man.

Them's Oscar Words - Newsweek Calls Brokeback "Landmark Film"
Newsweek's Sean Smith brings everything about Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain into the light of day - it is a "near perfect adaptation" and a "landmark film." Heath Ledger reignites career...it remains to be seen, though, will th emostly male, mostly straight Acad going to freak out? Smith:
The film, written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, is a near-perfect adaptation of Proulx's work. It has already earned the top prize at the Venice Film Festival and is almost certain to be an Oscar contender. More than that, though, "Brokeback" feels like a landmark film. No American film before has portrayed love between two men as something this pure and sacred. As such, it has the potential to change the national conversation and to challenge people's ideas about the value and validity of same-sex relationships. In the meantime, it's already upended decades of Hollywood conventional wisdom

Posted: 11/13/05 at 4:09pm*minor threadjack* When the movie Dogma opened there were alot of protest, and I remember seeing Kevin Smith on Jay Leno, and he said that he picked up a sign and joined right in, and that he even got interviewed on the news. I just thought it was a nice comment on how stupid protesting a movie can be.

Amen!
It's funny. They don't protest the dozens of sexually explicit heterosexual movies that come out every year, about straight people humping each other with no attached feelings, but a gay movie comes out about a loving relationship, and they freak out.

So true Bobby. It's okay to go and see the movie Brown Bunny which had that scene where Chloe Sevigney gave a guy a BJ, but to see two men who share a really wonderful and beautiful romance is just disgusting!
I do hope this movie opens some eyes, and hearts.

"Moviegoer response to these movies will finally give Hollywood the wealth of market data it so sorely needs."
This type of thinking is a little worrisome.

Matt Drudge has already been sounding the siren on in. The talk radio bots and the Fox News blowhards can't be far behind (if they haven't started already -- I don't listen to that crap).
Which, as others have already said, is ultimately a good thing for the movie. Just ask Martin Scorcese.

Forbidden Territory
In Ang Lee's devastating film 'Brokeback Mountain,' Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger buck Hollywood convention.
By Sean Smith
Newsweek
Nov. 21, 2005 issue - Two weeks ago, Ang Lee showed his new film to an audience in Los Angeles, and afterward he stuck around to answer questions from the crowd. Director Q&As are pretty common in the movie industry, and Lee—who won an Oscar for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and has directed such acclaimed films as "The Ice Storm" and "Sense and Sensibility"—has done more than his share. But something strange happened this time—the same thing that happens almost every time Lee screens "Brokeback Mountain." "People don't have many questions," he says. "Most of the time, they just stand up and tell me how they feel." When they're still crying, he already knows.
