I liked watching the two fat ladies too - especially when they would go to the market and one would drive the bike and the other would sit in the little sidecar. Too bad the food was wretched - they were alwyas cooking up things like kidney pie and whatnot.
Last time I was watching Paula, she was making red velvet cake. Well, this northerner has never had red velvet cake (although I understand it's quite popular in the south, and rather tasty too) so I was genuinely curious.
She was mixing butter, sugar, powdered sugar, coconut and cream cheese for the icing! I had 10 bucks on her dropping it into a deep fryer before she was done...(I lost the bet).

I have never had red velvet cake either.
The 2 fat ladies were the best. "add heavy cream, lard and buttah...now lets kill some fowl."

Yay, Fat Ladies!
All the world was breaded and deep-fried.
Usually after rubbing with a stick of butter and simmering in heavy cream.
Just as God intended it to be.
*sigh*

I miss their banter and their camaraderie. And those fabulously “British” locations. I always wanted them to drive over to my own "castle" to cook "Bubble & Squeak.”

FYI Mateo--
Flay's infamous "jumping on the counter" celebration happened on an episode of Iron Chef Japan. Not America. But you're right. It was completely disrespectful, not to mention unsanitary.
I like Flay on "Boy Meets Grill", but I find most of the food he makes for Iron Chef to be boring and repetative. All he does on that show is sauces.
My roommate loves Ina Garten, but she channels Martha Stewart a little too much for my liking.
Love love love Alton Brown and "Good Eats." I find it's easy to remember a lot of his advice/recipes because the shows are so focused. I get confused when chefs make a whole bunch of different dishes in one show. But the fact that Alton has one main ingredient/technique for each show makes it easy.

Jim O'Connor is by far the best looking man on the food network.

However, if the recipe includes coconut in the icing, pass on by ... well, unless, unlike me, you like coconut, then I guess you can try it, but that was the first time I ever heard of coconut in the icing!

#109re: food Network Hosts You Hate
Posted: 6/23/06 at 6:24pmI have had plenty of cakes with coconut in the icing - and they tend to be made around Easter. However, I think they are called Queen Elizabeth Cakes.

Everyone should try red velvet cake at least once, but probably not using Paula Dean's recipe.
Ina always makes SO MUCH food. If I had to eat everything she prepares for that one meal, I'd be sick, let alone eating that much for *every* meal.

Posted: 6/23/06 at 8:02pmHas anyone seen Ina Garten's "Holiday" show? She never mentions Christmas or Channukah, it's just "Happy Holidays" and it gets annoying because you realize how she's trying to avoid the mention of actual holidays. I mean, she visits her neighbors and gives them "Holiday" cookies, she makes a "Holiday" breakfast for her husband and wishes hem "Happy Holidays" before he goes to work. Then she uses artichokes for "Holiday" decorations. When her guests arrive, they all are very semitic-looking. Why didn't she just wish them all a "Happy Channukah" and get it over with?

Dolly - while reading your post, I was setting myself to respond with something about inclusiveness. This last statement made me change my mind.

Posted: 6/23/06 at 8:30pmThe avoidance of referring to any holiday is what made the whole show so annoying. When she visited her enighbors, they had Christmas wreaths on the doors. Her repeated phrase, "Happy Holidays!" was extremely forced.

Posted: 6/23/06 at 9:52pmDP, I understand where you're coming from. I guess trying to be politically correct sometimes get out of hand. If someone celebrates Christmas, then by all means, say, "Merry Christmas". Same holds true of for Channukah, or whatever holiday one happens to be celebrating.

You know who DOES mention Christmas...
Sandra Lee.
"ITS CHRISTMAS! My nieces and nephews are coming over and we are going to have a great time decorating the tree for Santa.. so get out your crescent rolls and colored sprinkles!! Christmas YAY!"
-Adam Shankman.

I think it's funny that Ina has repeatedly made dishes for her husband for Friday nights because she talks about how Jewish he and his family are but she won't wish anyone a merry Channukah? That's annoying.
Ugh, Sandra Lee LIVES for Holdiay themes. Have you ever noticed that she decorates her entire KITCHEN according to the theme of her show? She even has different-colored appliances so that she can color-coordinate with her "theme". Jesus, I wish I had that kind of money to throw away!
#121re: food Network Hosts You Hate
Posted: 6/23/06 at 10:20pmDon't forget Sandra's Christmas sweater, the holly garlands strung from the window and the Christmas tree in the middle of the counter, complete with the train set going around the bottom. Her "decorations" for each theme are laughable- especially the horrific "Faux Buddha"- which is apparently female.

Posted: 6/23/06 at 10:22pmDid you see the Thanksgiving/holiday specials where they had a bunch of hosts together making food together? oh wow, they were all SO uncomfortable with each other and it was totally obvious. They just wanted to get out of there.
