i don't when it started, but my childhood is marked by great Tv theme songs (Diff'rent Strokes, Facts of Life, Cheers, etc.) while my adulthood is empty of those - the theme songs now are quick, unmemorable instrumental tidbits.
sucks.
I hadn't thought about it... but you're right.
Seems like the last great tv theme song was from Friends.
I agree. I miss ACTUAL TV theme songs.
I like UGLY BETTY's theme, even if it is instrumental.
:-]
Although it is just instrumental, I LOVE The Office's theme song (American version).
I also enjoy the song for Scrubs.
I also remember when TV theme songs would be more than 10 seconds. It seems that show themes sometimes start long, then get shorter as the show gets older.
Currently, I really like the theme for 30 Rock. Short and sweet.

The Veronica Mars theme is kickass, but it was an actual song before the show. Same with House. But now this week they made House go the way of Grey's...just a title frame and 3 chords. Sigh.
for christmas I bought my brother a CD of the top fifty greatest TV theme songs. Im sorry I didnt buy myself one.
Just think how much more cash the television networks rake in from what is now a 30-second ad spot at the start of every single TV show. Think of the TV execs! Think of their children!

I agree that this sucks. I've always been a huge fan of the TV theme song and have spent hours online trying to compile my favorites into a custom playlist. TV is just not the same without them. Of course, after your post, I got to thinking about how there seems to be a general movement in television away from the traditional sitcom, so it kind of makes sense that the traditional lyric-filled theme song is going away, too. I mean, what kind of lyrics could someone write for Grey's Anatomy or the like?

I never noticed, but you're right - no lyrics anymore.
When I was a kid, almost every TV show theme had lyrics - Brady Bunch, Three's Company, Facts of Life, Diff'rent Strokes - so many!
The last good ones were probably Friends and Party of Five.

This is it. This is it.
This is life, the one you get
So go and have a ball.
This is it. This is it
Straight ahead and rest assured
You can’t be sure at all.
So while you’re here enjoy the view
Keep on doing what you do
So hold on tight we'll muddle through
One day at a time, One day at a time.
So up on your feet. Up on your feet
Somewhere there’s music playing.
Don’t you worry none
We’ll just take it like it comes.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
Angie and Nanny and the Professor...best tv songs ever.
Oh, and The Banana Splits.
The Buffy theme song was awesome.
There are some shows that have TV theme songs, not all of them come from the TV show, though. Like all three CSIs have good theme songs, but they're all songs from The Who from years ago. I do love The office's theme, even if it is instrumental. And agreed--Scrubs' song is really great. But it does seem like a lot of the shows have lost that great spirit that came from the songs they played at the beginning. It was the part that you could really remember about the shows, even decades later.
Cheno, you made me feel really old with that...thanks!
:)
More noteworthy themes: Alice, Facts of Life, All in the Family, Laverne & Shirley, Baretta
Buffy only ended a few years ago (has it really been that long??) so you're not old!

The seventies ruled as far as TV theme songs go (Good Times, The Jeffersons, Maude, etc.), but the eighties had some fun songs, too. Doodle, I also LOVED the theme from Angie!
Remember "Makin' It?" Remember Ann Jillian singing "It's a Living?"

Courtship of Eddie's Father...Nilson.
Anyone remember the theme to the 80's sitcom "Day by Day?" That show had CD Barnes, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Thora Birch. I loved that song.

Yes. Wasn't Courtney Thorne Smith on that show?
