I'm gonna go with Mr. Philip Glass. I'm not sure I've ever heard more boring and thoughtless music than his.
his Aknaten is fabulous, but I like little else of his
I agree.
Also Vivaldi. Could have have possibly written the exact same thing in one *more* key?
Kaily that is SO true, but I loves Vivaldi, I call it Baroque elevator music, but having said that, one of my favorite things to sing is his 'Gloria", and I do love the Four Seasons.......
Glass' score for The Hours is one of my favourite scores EVER.
I find Vivaldi a great joy to perform; a terrible bore to listen to. (Save the Seasons and Gloria, bien sur.) As a musician, it's definitely great fun to play all those thrilling twiddly bits, but as a listener, it's incredibly dull to hear the exact same cadences repeat themselves time and again...
but great dinner music you can ignore, lol

Well, since the Red Priest wrote most of his stuff for church, it somehow makes sense that it's all boring and repetitive.
Princeton, SMACK yourself until you cry.....you have defiled the GOD! (Now say that about ALW, and I'll kiss you)

I like the frenetic aspect of Philip Glass. I think his score for "Dracula" is great. But I find "Einstein on the Beach" a bit hard to take.
I haven't listened to Dracula.....

Phillip Glass' score for THE FOG OF WAR was pretty good (Highly recommend the movie too, by the way.)
As for most overrated, I'd probably have to go with Randy Newman. When the most memorable song in your canon is "You've Got a Friend In Me", there is a problem.

We'll have no opinions here unless they agree with mine!
I love Philip Glass, but I can definitely see how a lot of folks don't like him. I do agree with Sandwich on Randy Newman, though. His stuff makes me fall asleep.

At least Mr. Newman seems to have it all in perspective - as he did when he accepted his Oscar, "I don't need your pity!"
I'm not a big fan of Randy Newman's movie music either, but his singer/songwriter work from back in the day is full of brilliant songs (I Think It's Gonna Rain Today, God's Song, Sail Away, Mama Told Me Not to Come, so many others...).

Gustav Mahler. I find him to be far too obsessed with details so that I never am able to see the full-effect/big picture of the work. And I am sorry, but a 95 minutes symphony is simply not necessary.
I do also agree with Vivaldi.
Musical theater wise, and I think this probably goes without saying, ALW. His work is very pedestrian. I can't say that's entirely negative, part of what makes him so popular is that is music is very accessible to a listening novice.
amen to Mahler. You ever have to PLAY any of it? OY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm convinced he is why musicians drink so much.
I give Mahler cd's to people who I truly do NOT want to give a gift to, heh heh

That's awful.
I like Glass.
And speaking of Webber, I got Ivan hooked on CATS yesterday. He downloaded the entire album. Oy.
For film: James Newton Howard
