Mister M - What you say is true, and perhaps the only way to interpret it. It just seems funny to me that this strange little award has ended up with the rep it undeniably has. I'd still be more excited over a SAG award myself.
And honestly, if these award presentations were private affairs and un-restricted timewise, I'd agree completely about the speeches. However, because of the broadcasting, carrying on and on comes across as indulgent, at least to me.
Also, just to be clear, my comment was about the GGs specifically, not awards in general.

I think Kate Winslet is lovely, and a good actress, but still not in the league with Meryl Streep.
As for her speeches, I didn't get the self indulgent feeling, but just the opposite.
I'm disappointed Amy Adams didn't take supporting actress, but very happy that Heath Ledger took supporting actor.
I'm also disappointed that Doubt wasn't nominated.
Gotta see Slumdog Milionaire.

^ heartily seconded. I would have loved to have seen Davis win for SA, her performance was impeccable.
