Oh, it's over ! With so many good American films this year, they chose to ignore ALL of them !!!! I'm only happy for Kate's double victory, Heath, Wall-E and Mad Men ! Good night, all !

I only have a few things to say:
1)Kate Winslet is a freaking GODDESS and could not be more adorable and sweet and I am so freaking happy for her
2)Heath <3
3)I need to see Slumdog Millionaire. Like now.
Oh and boo for NPH not winning best supporting actor in a TV comedy series, but woo for the Tina Fey wins :P

Posted: 1/11/09 at 11:15pmI guess I should see The Wrestler now, though I am sad for no Doubt, Benjamin Button, and Frost/Nixon love. I am thrilled for Slumdog Millionaire, it was a wonderful theatrical experience. Hopefully there will be some surprises at the Oscars. Perhaps Kate winning 2 Oscars??? Not too thrilled for Rourke winning, would rather have seen Langella or DeCaprio win.

Don't have time to read through all 8 pages, so don't know if it's been said already, but Kate Winslet gave the two most self-indulgent speeches I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. Someone should teach her the meaning of the word Humility. We don't need to hear you thank everyone you ever met. I'm pretty sure at one point I heard her thank her anal bleaching technician.

Posted: 1/12/09 at 1:42amKate Winslet, arguably among the best actresses of her generation, had before this awards season been nominated for five Oscars, five BAFTAs, five Golden Globes, three People's Choice Awards, and six SAG awards. Of those, she won one BAFTA and one SAG award, both of which were for Sense and Sensibility, thirteen years ago. Sure, her speeches were a bit long-winded, but they're LONG overdue.

"but they're LONG"
Yes, they were. Too much so.
And I really do like her. But . . .
Frankly, I just can't wrap my head around why someone gets THAT excited over winning one of these things - other than that whole self-indulgent "I really like being acknowledged by ANYONE" thing. It's an award decided by a handful of peripheral writers - what's the big deal?
Even acknowledging the building awareness over the last years of the incredible money to be made in foreign markets, this seems to be the most overstated case of ass-kissing I've ever seen.
Is it fun and a good party? Sure. Is it nice to have your work acknowledged and get the added publicity (and attendent revenue)? Absolutely. But I can't help but think that anyone who gets THAT overly excited about it really doesn't know which end is up.

A lot of people at these award shows give long speeches. Actually they aren't really speeches, just a laundry list of folks that they've worked with or have known. Once in a great while there comes a real speech that actually has meaning. I always dread when I see a winner take out a piece of paper. My thought is thank the people in person. If ever win any type of award and have to make a speech, I hope that I don't pull out a list of names that no one has ever heard of..."I'd like to thank my high school drama teacher, my hairdresser, my great Aunt Ruth......."
I am sure it is very exciting to win an award, and I don't blame the actors or anyone else for getting overly excited.

So I guess I am the only one who does not like Kate Winslet. I have seem her in two or three movies and just can't stand her. Revolutionary Road looks like the most boring movie to ever exist. Maybe it is just their trailers/ad campaign but I have absolutely no desire to see it. Even if it wins an Oscar.
And this made me not want to see Slumdog Millionaire even more. It looks so contrived! Not to mention that I am pretty sure that when they show that girl getting to the phone in time COMPLETELY ruined what is a dramatic moment in the movie. Way to go clip.
What a disappointing night. Only things I was happy about was Bruce Springsteen and Wall-E

Posted: 1/12/09 at 10:18amSo now SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is the choice for Oscar for Best Picture. Oh, well, it makes perfect sense. An easy piece of feel-good sentimentality to follow last year's easy piece of feel-bad sentimentality.

Anna Paquin's make-up was flawless.

I only have two things to say about the GGs.
Sean Penn deserved to win, which still wouldnt have made up for the snub of "Milk" in general.
The Jonas brother on the right of the screen is gay.
"In Oz, the verb is douchifizzation." PRS

I agree about spoiling SLUMDOG....that's too bad.
However, I think Winslet's speeches (her second moreso than the first) were genuine and heartfelt. Those statistics (of not winning) are pretty shocking, and make her speeches even more endearing in my eyes. I'm just SO happy for her, I think she's absolutely wonderful. And Q, I agree, awards aren't the most important thing, and I suspect Winslet knows this too, but winning something after being nominated SO many times must feel pretty damn good, and it's a validation that other people in your profession appreciate your talent. And who doesn't want to be appreciated by their peers? I know the GG are given by critics, but still - it's the people who review her work on a regular basis!
And now, the Oscars - Kate Winslet FTW!!

"Even if he was good in this film, it was probably accidental, he is an awful actor !Even if he was good in this film, it was probably accidental, he is an awful actor!"
I disagree. I loved him in Diner and The Pope of Greenwich Village. He's a self-desctructive screw-up...and he's hard to look at these days, but I always thought he was a hell of an actor. I saw the trailer for The Wrestler when I saw Milk yesterday, and I really want to see it.
I am crazy about Kate Winslet and didn't mind her speech at all.

It's an award decided by a handful of peripheral writers - what's the big deal?
Given the amount of international attention and publicity it garners (second only to the Oscars in film award shows), it must be something of a big deal. How it became such a big deal is unknown to me, but the fact that it is a big deal is irrefutable. Hell, I'd be thankful if I received an acting award on the second biggest night in film awards leading up to the Oscars. I'd probably babble a lot worse than Kate Winslet.
Sometimes, people just act like people. So what?
