Lourenco was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery to remove the javelin tip.
I don't understand this... I'd think they'd pull the thing out, then worry about surgery. Huh.
I think they don't want to pull it out until the bleeding can be stopped.
Steve Irwin might not have died, had he not pulled out the stinger from his system.

I understand that, I meant at the hospital. Once there, wouldn't they pull it out? Then perform surgery to stop the bleeding, etc?
When you look at a Stingrays stinger you see why. It looks like a double edged serrated knife. It had to rip his heart apart when he pulled it out. He panicked (understandably) & it cost him

I'm not talking about the stingray situation. (And I have seen their stingers, by the way.) I'm talking about the javelin, which has a smooth (pointy!) tip. It was just a curiosity quesiton.

I was always under the impression that you had to be prepared when you removed anything like an arrow because of the bleeding that it involves and the arrowhead causing as much or more damage on the way out as going in, so you have to be careful when removing the object.
But, I am by no means an expert.

I'm pretty sure that as a general rule, when you get stabbed by anything that remains impaled in you, you shouldn't remove it until you get to the ER. It just exacerbates the bleeding.

yeah... stuff like that makes me cringe. hope she got a tetanus booster after.
A javelin thrower hit her in the foot?????? What a prick......a javelin in the foot! Ouch.

I hope she's got a good insurance plan.

Owie...I think you leave an impaled object in(wherever it is in the body), but stabilize it (wrap something around to secure it). If you remove it, you can cause tissue and nerve damage and blood loss. It should be removed by medical staff. That's what I remember from my Self Aid/buddy care lectures for field triage. :)
? Why didn't she RUN like *(&)?
