"Things are scary out there folks. We can't keep on operating as if all was fine in the world. It isn't and hasn't been for a long time."
Please--heightened security? You can't actually protect every single space from every possible bag. Why would a theater be more of a target than, say, a subway? Or hell, the sidewalk outside a theater when a show lets out? It's a busy city--anywhere can be dangerous. Look in people's bags if you want, but don't require people to drop their bags at a bag check. I have my messenger bag with me at every show I go to--actually at every ANYthing I go to. Charging me $1 to unwillingly let some random person watch my things? I don't think so.
"People bring LUGGAGE (literally!), for pity's sake, which they think they will store in the back or on the stairs or wherever & that is not possible. Large bags simply should not be brought to the theatre."
Sometimes there just isn't enough time to get to your hotel room before the show to put your lugguge away.
Don't believe everything that you hear! Only the peeps involved know the truth!
I remember a year or so ago a bar in NYC that went through a period where they
a) Made you check your bags b) Charged you $2 for it c) Posted a sign saying they weren't responsbile for checked bags
I asked the manager how many lawsuits he thought he'd have by the end of the week. They abandoned the policy shortly thereafter (not because of me, of course).
I think it's ridiculous to force a "service" on someone and expect them to pay for the privilege. Updated On: 10/1/08 at 04:22 PM
Maybe it's because I live in Washington, DC, but I really don't understand the fuss. Since 9/11 you can't enter any public building without going through a bag check. It's fast and painless. Believe me - they're far too busy to worry about personal items in your bag. (Even if it is a radish.) Fuss about the $1 charge if you want, but not about the bag check.

Mamie ~ The charge isn't for them to look in your bag. The charge is to put an item in coat/bag check and have someone watch it...when it might not be your choice to put it there.

Don't know if they're giving it out at EQUUS. ...Maybe?
It's not ridiculous to want to look in bags to make sure for safety... but to force us to check them and the charge us for it? That's ridiculous. A lot of people come into the city for the day and bring a backpack. Give 'em a break.
