I haven't seen enough of this season's shows yet to really voice an opinion on all that many of the nominations. I'm really glad to see recognition for Rabbit Hole, and based on what I've heard about the Wedding Singer (not that it's bad, but just *what* it is itself), I'm surprised at how many it got. It almost seems like a filler, in some categories, one might think. Leading actress is going to be the big tough category this year.... wow. As good as Bob Martin is, I'm surprised he was able to snag the nomination, given that he barely sings, and is in the musical category. And lastly, I'm not surprised, but very happy with the number of nominations Sweeney got; and especially the fact that Manoel beat the odds and the naysayers.
SO happy to see Danny Burstein finally recognized this awards season for his hilarious performance! Great choice for a nom.
And I'm very happy that Drowsy has been recognized so widely across the board with these nominations. Still a bit puzzled by Sutton in the leading category, but I'd rather have that than to pit her against Beth Leavel, who I now think will win in the featured category! Go Beth!

Actors have won Leading Actor in a Musical and don't sing.
I forget who.
Smaxie?
Well, I think that's a bit silly.
best12bars, that may have been the reason Sutton was pushed for lead; so the two wouldn't be up against each other -- much the way Kelli O'Hara was pushed for featured last season, so she wouldn't be in competition with Victoria Clark.
I'm especially happy for Tyne and Cynthia, David Wilmot, Allison Pill and Domhnall Gleeson, Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour, Samuel Barnett, and Mark Ruffalo. I would have liked to have seen Mary Catherine Garrison up there as well. I thought she was terrific. And, I'm a little surprised Cherry didn't get a nod, but she did win last year. My only real gripe is that Kathleen Turner couldn't have been nominated for V.W. this year. She totally would have won--as she so completely deserved.

Chica, I've been telling him that for months....never gonna happen.
What do we make of the fact that all 5 of the women nominated in the Best Actress in a Play category performed in now closed shows? I think this kind of opens up the field, as each of these ran for a short period of time and there's no key frontrunner.
I'm hoping it boosts Judy Kaye's chances. I saw no finer performance by an actress in a play this year.
And did we talk somewhere about how Tarzan got basically nothing and I missed it? Because that's pretty crazy.

I'm happy for Stephen Lynch. Considering the kid has never stepped on a stage before or done any kind of professional acting I thought he did a great job. I don't think the nomination is for the quality of his performance but rather the effort and ability he displayed.
Now, how Wedding Singer got the other nominations is beyond me. Best Book? There was a book to this show?
Matthew Sklar.....is he related to Seinfeld's wife? Wasn;t she somehow connected to Brodway, like he rfamily owned a theatre or something? Nepotism is the only way that show got produced and brought to Broadway.
I'd love to see Sweeney Todd and History Boys Before the Tony's/
I Date, Therefore I'm Bitter
Yup. Tarzan's lack of recognition was definately noticed. But it's not a snub to me. It just... logical. It didn't exactly open to raves. Actually, my friend and I were discussing the fact that the fourth slot in the musical race this year seemed to be a game of "least objectionable of what's left to choose from".

Well said Vespertine1228! I hope Judy Kaye takes the Award. She was sublime. Nothing would make me happier!
COLOR PURPLE received 11 Oscar nominations with no nod for Spielberg and no wins.
Fast forward 20 years - 11 Tony nominations with no nod for director, Griffin. Interesting. I wonder if history will continue to repeat itself. I hope not - I'm rooting for LaChanze!
Yeah, I was excited to see Stephen Lynch get the nomination as well. I agree that there's not a lot of depth to the character, but being a first time actor on Broadway and asked to carry a show, I think he did a very solid job.

Me too Rose Sayer. I loved Patti and the rest, but La Chanze is just a spectacle, no matter the quality of the material. How does that girl sing her ass off and project that rich, powerful voice on every single note and song? Lord only knows.
She blew me away.

Chita is also surprised! Congrats Chita.

I didn't see any Replacement nods. Will they annouce at the Tony's?
I too would love to see TCP take it all. Maybe if the voters are split between DC and JB...you never know. I'm not expecting anything, but would poleasantly surprised if it happened!
I don't think Elisabeth and Felicia will cancel each other out...their roles are just so different.
*Replacement tony--I'm upset but just realized something. They said the actor had to be in the role for 6 months. Pryce has been in since January--4 months now, 5 by the Tonys. Stupid rule.
Finally, I'm not surprised, but a little upset Maria Friedman couldn't have gotten some recognition. She deserved the nod anyway, despite backstage aspects.
And I adore Chita, but would love to see La Chanze steal it away!
I hate the stupid notion of people from the same shows "cancelling each other out." That's stupid. It's impossible. If they both recieve an extraordinary amount of votes, one will always be greater than the other, and, if they're tied, they will both win. It's not like they say "Oh, Felicia Fields has 100 votes, so does Withers-Mendes....so, cross them out, let's go with Beth Leveal who only had 40."
"Anyone else surprised by Lynch's nomination?"
Yeah, Wanna Be A Foster, who wrote: "I feel sad thinking about how NY theater critics are going to take newbie Stephen Lynch, chew him up, and spit him and this disaster of a show out all over the city."
re: Break a leg, WEDDING SINGER! Thread
I want to know what you guys think about the Chita nomination?
Will they give it to her because she's Chita, and a legend?
Chita has lost MANY times before.
Or will it go to the other legend, Patti LuPone? Who, as much as I love Chita - I think Patti deserves it more. urrgh, this is so tough.
So what do you think all the shows will perform? I'm hoping Sweeney will start with the opening Ballad and then go into "A Little Preist." It would show off their three nominees nicely.

Oh cmon, no choreography nom for Tarzan? I know that the theatre community may have a vendetta against it, but ape-like movement harks back to the very advanced practices of modern dance royalty like Grahm and Limon. I'm pissed.

Chita is Chita. And does not deserve a Tony for that.
Her show was Chita BEING Chita. If she couldn't do it, she should have been checked into an insane asylum...not getting negative reviews.
My point is...No.
LaChanze for President.
