2009 Best Musical Tony Award

Forgive me if this has already been discussed...I'm just trying to gather some information.

According to what we know now, the only shows in contention will be:
13
9 TO 5
A TALE OF TWO CITIES
BILLY ELLIOT
SHREK
[TITLE OF SHOW]

(I thought VANITIES was also this season?)

If this is a correct list, I'll assume the nods will go to 9 TO 5, BILLY ELLIOT, SHREK, and [TITLE OF SHOW].

Also I imagine WHITE CHRISTMAS will be considered for the Best Musical category unless they try to go for Special Theatrical Event but that category is pretty filled up as it is.
The year blows but only in terms of original musicals. I think play revivals are ruling the season and I'm completely okay with that given the great casts and directors these productions are assembling.

For original musicals, YOU SAID IT ljay. Although BILLY ELLIOT is the definite winner as far as I am concerned. By MILES. So I am sort of glad that next season's original musicals are not this season, so they have a chance to "shine."

Oh...there have been years just as bad. Probably worse!

I'm not sure if [tos] will get the nod over TOTC....but it would be nice, from my point of view. However, if BE does end up winning most awards...at least it was worthy!

and to add to the discussion --- I don't think it deserves Best Score....but what does???

The Story Of My Life will be a strong contender for the 2009 Best Musical Tony Award! Remember, the same year Wicked was up for Best Musical, Avenue Q won. This new musical is being highly underestimated because it started in Toronto in 2006 and just finished a pre-Broadway engagement at the Goodspeed Opera House. Once people who are unfamiliar with its' beautiful score and book become aware of its' quality, I think word of mouth will put this contender right in line for Best Musical Tony 2009.

I imagine Billy will win some awards (Possibly Best Actor for the kids, Best Choreography probably, etc.), but I really, honestly believe the majority of the Tony's this year will go to 9 to 5. I think they could take home Best Actress, Best Featured Actress, Best Score, Best Scenic Design, Best Costumes, and even Best Musical...

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

Hard for many of us East Coasters to comment on 9 to 5 yet.

And yes, how can we forget ROA? Oy. I suppose it's been talked about so much from OFF B'way!

Billy Elliot, 9 to 5, Shrek, and Rock of Ages...there's my vote! (of course, I actually liked Young Frankenstein, so what do I know :O)

It could be much worse. At least there is a choice. I'm not saying that Sunset Blvd. wasn't a good show years ago, nor will I say that it didn't deserve the Tony, but who knows what would have happened had it actually had some sort of competition. It really won the big prizes by default, whether it was good or not.

I have seen all the shows the you predict to be nominated except 9 to 5. I am dying to see 9 to 5, it looks great! Judging by some of the videos and bits of the score I have heard it can take a big load of Tony's home. The set is much more superior to Billy Elliot's and although I do think Billy Elliot will get choreography but 9 to 5 also has some great choreography, Andy did amazing work for In The Heights and I'm sure did the same for this. I also think 9 to 5 will take away score from Elton John. I hope BIlly Elliot doesn't sweep the awards.

Billy Elliot, 9 to 5, Shrek, and Rock of Ages sounds right to me too. WIth Billy Elliot as the obvious favorite and ROA being a dark horse (rumor is the re-tooling for the broadway transfer is actually going really well)

New to this, but if it seems like a weak field does that open the door for Next to Normal and Alice Ripley to contend if a transfer happens? I'm sure that's part of the decision process for them, no?

I am guessing that, since they've not actually said they are NOT transferring, and the cast and director keep saying "we're not sure yet" that it's an active possibility.

I'm aware that this is for new musical but I'm scared to see the list of best revival of a play!

Does TOTC even have a chance? I thought shows had to run for a specific amount of time to even be considered?

And just think - with all the shows that have closed, VERY few will actually be performing.

And considering that musicals that have closed rarely win the Tony, the currently running contenders (at least at the time of the tonys) are:

Billy Elliot
Shrek
9 to 5
