I don't understand that comment...how do you know what will be running at the time of the Tonys?
Anyway, at this point, I'd guess BILLY ELLIOT, 9 TO 5, ROCK OF AGES, and SHREK will get nominations.
9 TO 5 is a huge dark horse this season. I've been saying that since it opened in L.A. It could very well win Best Musical...from what I hear, it's the frontrunner for Best Actress, Best Score, Best Set Design, Best Lighting Design, and will pose a serious threat in the Choreography slot.
We'll see...

I don't see how VANITIES could manage to raise enough money in time to make it this season.
I would say it is a pretty safe bet to assume we would see it on Broadway in the fall, if at all.
The producers have moved on to Joe DiPiero's MEMPHIS.

You have a better chance of winning the lottery than of A TALE OF TWO CITIES winning Best Musical. Or even being nominated.
Did you read the reviews...?

Posted: 1/20/09 at 6:25pmI agree with ljay. Come on, writers! THINK! I think we should start brainstorming ideas for shows.

I think Wicked Rocks has a pretty solid prediction
BILLY ELLIOT, 9 TO 5, ROCK OF AGES, and SHREK
I think of all the shows eligible these particular shows will also provide the most entertaining telecast. Fun numbers for the TV audience.

I'm thinking (& hoping!) for the nods to be: 9 to 5, Shrek, Billy Elliot and A Tale of Two Cities. Will Tale win? No way! But pulling for a nod.
Tale may also get some recognition for Barbour & Lighting (I was re-reading some of the reviews on here from people & even looking at the pictures...I remember coming out of there saying I liked the lighting...which isn't really the best to say!), and possibly Toro for feat. Actress (unlikely with all the Actresses (again) this year). And who knows, if '9 to 5's score is as good as everyone has been saying (and I have heard virtually nothing of it), Tale could poss. get a nod for that since it'd be an almost sure loss (Woman in White anyone?).

Posted: 1/20/09 at 7:39pmI'm Praying for a TOS nod for musical and score. Score cuz its deserving and musical cuz I just really wanna see them perform on the Tonys.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 8:12pmYeah, I'm pulling for a [tos] best musical nomination as well. I would love to see them perform on the Tonys!
#35Would Next to Normal be competitive?
Posted: 1/20/09 at 8:16pmWell, even if [tos] were to be nominated, they won't be able to perform because they are closed.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 8:20pmJust a question. Has the possibility of Fela for this season been scrapped altogether? There was a lot of buzz when it opened off-Broadway that it might transfer to Broadway, but that seems to have died down, as in disappeared. Anyone know what's happening with this one?

"they won't be able to perform because they are closed"
this is FALSE
and if they were nominated, since its just the four of them, most likely, they would perform...
Side Show had Ripley/Skinner sing "I Will Never Leave You" even though it was closed already... so, just because its closed doesn't mean they can't perform

Well, if 9 to 5 wants to be nominated, it can't push its opening night date back because after the 30th (opening) is the cut-off date.
If it were to push any dates back, they would probably be the preview dates.
I guess that's all I can say.
#40Would Next to Normal be competitive?
Posted: 1/20/09 at 9:30pmYeah, I've been dying to see 9 TO 5 and really want to go to the first preview but I'm pretty sure they're going to bump back the first preview date so I'm waiting on it.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 9:52pmpianolin, I believe the rule has been changed in recent years. For example, The Apple Tree was nominated for Best Revival and did not have a performance like all the other Best Revival nominees because it had already closed.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 9:57pmI don't know much, well really anything about Rock of Ages but as far as Billy Elliot, 9 to 5, and Shrek go... I think 9 to 5 is gonna take most of the awards, including best musical.

"The Apple Tree was nominated for Best Revival and did not have a performance like all the other Best Revival nominees because it had already closed."
I don't think Kristin was there so without her they couldn't really perform. Or was she there?
#45Would Next to Normal be competitive?
Posted: 1/20/09 at 10:10pmI am not sure if Kristin was there, but according to the Tony website, Amour, which was closed at the time of the awards, also did not perform even though it was nominated for Best Musical.

#47Would Next to Normal be competitive?
Posted: 1/20/09 at 10:49pmI believe the year of the Big River revival was the first year the Tony Awards stopped letting closed shows perform. They haven't let them ever since.

Well, then again, last year all of the still-running non-Best-Musical-nominees performed a number.
And this year with so many shows closing, I'm sure they'll do everything they can do boost ratings, include the most performances, highlight the most celebrities, etc etc. So I wouldn't be surprised at all if they allow [tos] to perform if they get nominated. Or if they allow all of the non-nominees to perform snippets of numbers again.

Posted: 1/21/09 at 2:17pmAnyone on this board who think A Tale of Two Cities will be nominated for best musical is delusional! Did you read the freaking reviews? Not just negative...pans! Also, I have yet to see Rock of Ages and Story of My Life, but I find it hard to believe that the Tony nominating committee (New York artists/producers) would pick a jukebox musical over a good quality original piece (a.k.a. Rock of Ages over [tos]). [tos] will never win with out of town voters, but the nominating committee of mostly New York theatre people gets the first say. If Story of My Life is good, it could bump [tos]. Eitherwise, I think the [tos] clan has the nomination in the bag.
