2009 Best Musical Tony Award

Posted: 1/21/09 at 2:50pmnot to be "it's about money" but you can never take out of the equation that [tos] is no longer playing and especially in this economic time the broadway community NEEDS people to come to the theater again and support shows that people can come to NYC and see. It may factor into which shows are nominated. But then again, who knows. I've seen ROA but not [tos] or Story Of My Life, so I can't comment on which is more worthy. Although I will say that ROA is the most clever and fun jukebox musical I've ever seen (kind of a pretty girl in an "ugly contest" but still a really good show)

There is often a confusion 'round here between reality and personal taste. Panned flops like 2 Cities and 13 don't stand a chance. When this is said, many posters take this as a personal dismissal of their beloved show. While you're entitled to enjoy these shows, the reality of the general opinion of said show needs to be taken into account.
I imagine that many posters will be unhappy with the Tony nominations for title of show unless they're nominated in every single category. I can see them filling in a few categories here or there, but the acting categories are extremely competitive this year. The best I can see them doing is a possible Best Book nomination.
Shrek, 9 to 5, and Billy Elliot feel like locks at this point. With Billy Elliot and 9 to 5 being the likeliest for wins. The 4th will be filler with no chance of winning anything.
That's the reality of it. Nobody is trying to lessen anyone's theatrical experience

And what gives [tos] major problems with getting a nod for Best Book is that every new musical (even if it's adapted from a movie like 9 TO 5, BILLY, or SHREK or if its a jukebox musical with a pop-music score like ROCK OF AGES) is eligible for Best Book. So that makes that category much more competitive as opposed to, say, Best Score where something like ROA is not going to be eligible.
[tos] will most definitely not get any acting nods and if they did it would have been in the Outer Critics or Drama Desk awards but the show is not eligible to be nominated for either as it garnered nods when it opened off-Broadway a few years back. Yes, all four actors were very good but the reality of it is that they were playing themselves. So the question will most likely not come down to their talent but whether or not they deserve recognition for playing...themselves.

I haven't seen ROCK OF AGES but from what I read, people really enjoy it and have a good time, but no one I talked to thought it was a great show, and the music isn't even original.
TITLE OF SHOW on the other hand is seen by most as a creative success.
If the forth spot is going to one of these two, I'd be thinking TITLE OF SHOW has the edge, I know it will be closed but remember it ran a long time off-Broadway and a lot of theatre people saw it.
and SPIDERMAN?

The new lawsuit will not affect the production. It's against a lawyer for misrepresentation.

"If so why was YOUNG FRANK kicked out so fast?"
not necessarily they they were kicked out, they honestly could have not done well sale wise and couldn't keep up with it in the current economy
