Would like to know how people feel about the reworking of the show.
"Listen" is now in the show as a duet between Effie and Deena.
Video clips of the song can be seen at

I really like it! They don't sound that great. But I like the new lyrics, and it was the right moment to use the song for.
I didn't know they were re-working the song!! I think it's GREAT as a duet & the new lyrics!!

"Ghetto fabolous" or not, I'm reaaaaaally excited for this. As long as it goes to Broadway, I'm good...
I think they sounded very good. Not sure I like all of the new lyrics. Not sure why. It is kinda cool that they turned it into a duet since they decided to add the song to the show.
I really like that "Listen" is in the show. And I love that it's been placed where it has and made a duet, I think it's extremely appropriate and gonna be a really nice moment in the show.
The only part I don't really like is with the new lyrics, it sounds like a bunch of sung dialogue instead of a song song. The 2nd act of Dreamgirls is SO heavy with all that sung dialogue, I wish it had more of a verse/chorus structure. BUT, I'm nitpicking. I think it'll sound great, and I love Dreamgirls, and I think Henry Kreiger is a brilliant composer. I can't WAIT to see this tour! :)
oops, double post...
If it weren't sung dialogue, it'd stick out like a sore thumb, no? And I don't think it is the intention for this song to stick out...at least not as used in the stage production. But neither of us has seen it yet, so let's wait and see how the addition works...
Just wondering why you chose to name this thread the Ghetto Fabolous version?
Good point Capn... we'll have to see. I'm extremely excited for this tour.
Always loved Syesha. REALLY excited for this. Hopefully some sort of legit recording will come from it.
I think it sounds quite beautiful, and I like the reworked lyrics. I'm really interested to hear Moya Angela sing 'And I Am Telling You'.
'Ghetto fabolous' is a little tactless...
The re-working of "Listen" is brilliant. Wish I could see the tour. Looks great!

I can't read Kavana's mind, but the "Dreamgirl's Mix" on the website isn't professionally recorded. Shoot, the video on the website that Kavana is referring to looks like it was just pulled off of someone's private YouTube page.
Plus, it was just an easy shot.
Why is this "Ghetto fabulous???" Bad choice of words.
I really like the reimagining of the sets and costumes, and what little I see of the choreography. It all looks like a first-rate production. Very fresh.
The girls are very good, but not great. Seems like they're the understudies or stand-ins for Beyonce and Hudson. Not unique or original enough personalities. But definitely capable. They're making the story and the production into the star, from what I can tell. Rather than the people. Ultimately, after Jennifer Holliday left, that's what happened to the original Broadway production.
This could be a really solid revival/reworking.
I thought the video was fine. I found the thread title more of a cheap shot that an easy one. And Ghetto Fabolous is the CD by the hip hop artist Fabolous. I think the op meant Ghetto Fabulous. Just an observation.
I think they nailed Listen. Wow! I'm disappointed this isn't coming to Detroit, I mean here's where it kind of all started!

i like it.. alot... but i get what that one poster was saying... it sounds interesting as dialogue and the lyrics, to me, sound too wordy for the music... did that make sense? either way... i enjoyed it
as for the "ghetto fabolous"... i honestly think the poster was just trying to be funny but it just made him sound REALLY ignorant and racist...
I don't think the song should have been incorporated, the new lyrics are sort of weak and making the song a duet just doesn't seem to work. Perhaps it will translate better on stage.

Curtis, I think that is my problem with it. I don't think it needs to be included. Why tinker with the original by adding a song from the movie? I liked the song in the movie and feel they should have left it there. JMO
Let me just address "eatlasagna" As for being "raciest" im BLACK myself K BOO?
I titled this thread "Ghetto Fabulous" because the lyrics of Listen. They are very "ghetto" dumbed down and as CurtisT2 said weak.
ALSO the choreographer is hip-hop Shane Sparks from "Americas Best Dance Crew"

but really you titled it ghetto fabOlous

Actually, in the original Broadway production Deena and the girls perform "Move" at the Apollo Theater in New York City. They're from Chicago, Illinois.
For the film-version, director/writer Bill Condon changed all that. He made the girls from Detroit, MI (ala Diana Ross and the original ladies) and "Move" takes place in a theatre in Detroit, MI.
is there by any chance gonna be a cast recording? their version of "dreamgirls" in the music player is amazing!

Looking at this production it looks far from ghetto. Im talking thousands of bucks far from ghetto...just saying. It would be more accurate to call this "2009 Dreamgirls-The Aristocratic version"
