Yeah it looks a lot better funded than the original, actually.
They didn't sound very good singing "Listen". At least not the chubby bear one.
"I titled this thread "Ghetto Fabulous" because the lyrics of Listen. They are very "ghetto" dumbed down and as CurtisT2 said weak."
Dumbed down?! Deena sings "I implore you!" at one point. Not only is that NOT "ghetto," it isn't appropriate for Deena Jones. It's not even appropriate for most doctoral students.
I actually winced at that point. No home girl from Detroit would sing or say, "I implore you," under any circumstances. Oy!
Wow! I'm disappointed this isn't coming to Detroit, I mean here's where it kind of all started!
Actually, in the original Broadway production Deena and the girls perform "Move" at the Apollo Theater in New York City. They're from Chicago, Illinois.
For the film-version, director/writer Bill Condon changed all that. He made the girls from Detroit, MI (ala Diana Ross and the original ladies) and "Move" takes place in a theatre in Detroit, MI.
^Probably what the poster meant when they said "where is all started." We wouldn't have Dreamgirls without Motown.
I'm more concerned about the choreography in the little interview preview saying they're going to use elements of hiphop and house in the choreography. Ugh. Is the choreography going to manage to be worse than the film?
How could any aspect of the show be worse than the film? You can only go up from that.

It's looking nice. Seems like an acceptable use of the LCD screens. The graphics at least make sense to what's happening on stage
Bobby, I caught that also and it gave me pause.
I enjoyed the movie. It wasn't perfect but I enjoyed it enough to buy the DVD. What I didn't like was the soundtrack recording.

I'm so fricken excited for this!
The pictures on the main page don't do this production any favors. They look like they were taken on a cell phone camera with a scratched lens, then stretched disproportionately.
I pretty much laughed at the lyric changes in listen. I really don't think it works as a duet. This worked in the movie so well as an eleven o'clock number, I just don't think it fits like this.

Let me just address "eatlasagna" As for being "raciest" im BLACK myself K BOO?
I titled this thread "Ghetto Fabulous" because the lyrics of Listen. They are very "ghetto" dumbed down and as CurtisT2 said weak.
ALSO the choreographer is hip-hop Shane Sparks from "Americas Best Dance Crew"
So, by your definition your post is ghetto fabulous.
I think it's sounds good. I'm glad Deena gets more of a chance to shine in the show now.
As for Detroit and Motown, sure the stage version owes it a debt, but the stage production itself has nothing to do with Detroit. Yes, some people like to think of the show a Supremes roman a clef but it was Bill Condon who chose to hit the audience over the head with it, like the audiences were all mildly retarded. In the show, Motown exists independently of the Dreams and co, while in the movie it doesn't exist at all.
By incorporating "Listen" into both the film and the new tour, that song itself dates the production due to the feel of that song in comparison to the original music. The LCD screen is one thing, but this song doesn't fit. This new tour may very well turn out to be a "ghetto fabulous version". Now only time will tell. I'll hold my judgement for after I see it.
"Ghetto fabolous" is my new favorite adjectival phrase.
How many ways can YOU think of to use "ghetto fabolous" in a sentence?
I really like "Listen" in the film, and like the reworking here, except they lyrics are clunky.
I didnt have as much of a problem with the singing in that vid, as with the horrible acting.
ALSO the choreographer is hip-hop Shane Sparks from "Americas Best Dance Crew"
Shane Sparks is credited as "co-choreographer" (I assume this means he will be recreating much of Bennett's work as Bennett is the only other choreographer credited to the production) and I really enjoyed his work on So You Think You Can Dance. You can find a clip of his Emmy-winning number by searching his name and the word "fuego".

I thought people stopped saying ghetto fabulous in the early oughts.

Yes, Phyllis, we say "Fabolous' now.
Perhaps it is mad krunk? I wonder if Paris thinks it's huge.
I don't get anything when I click Music or Video player
That's because you're not Ghetto Fabolous. Only people who are Ghetto Fabolous get something when they click.

Even though the Dallas Summer Musicals say it's coming to Dallas in 2009: http://www.dallassummermusicals.org/2010/shows/dreamgirls.shtm the official website does not.

I'm trying to make myself wait to hear the new "Listen" until I actually see the tour. I really want to try to see it in Cincinnati in June.

I didn't see a thing by Mr. Bennett in those clips, at all. It's like the entire production is sponsored by Red Bull.
