Posted: 4/26/11 at 11:38amThese are a joke every year. Women on the freakin verge over Catch Me? Are you kidding!! Women on the Verge was terrible, thats why it CLOSED in like 2 seconds. And Victoria Clark in leading actress category? And all those guys from Anything Goes over Rory O'Malley in BOM? Are you KIDDING ME!! O'malley is funnier than all those guys and will be nominated and probably win the Tony.

Some.. odd decisions. Why was Victoria Clark not featured? And all three men from Anything Goes- really? Alison Pill for Blue Leaves?
I do think that is a completely plausible Best Actor in a Musical line-up, if Butz is not considered Featured.

The Outer Critics are, as usual, bizarre.
Still, glad LuPone got a supporting nod.
O'Malley's snub is the biggest offense.

Posted: 4/26/11 at 11:47amReally glad to see Larie Metcalf, Judith Light, Estelle Parsons, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Tyne Daly and Edie Falco get nods. I wonder why Ellen Barkin didn't make the list over Allison Pill? I thougt Pill was good but I would have thought Barkin would have been nominated instead. Good to see Bedford, Pacino, Rylance, Mantello, as predicted by most. Also glad to see Seth Numrich, Yul Vazquez, Stacy Keach and Bobby Cannavale. It will be interesting to see where the Tonys put Falco, Rodriguez and Light. My guess is all three may be in Featured, but also possible that Rodriguez may get nomination in Lead category. She tore up the stage. So many great shows and performances this year. What a great season! Also very happy to see Michael Shannon acknowledged for his work in Mistakes Were Made - he was brilliant.

Posted: 4/26/11 at 11:53amWell, come on - consider the source. It's a bunch of out of town reviewers. I'm sure there'll be a lot of shrieking over this comment but - they're just a bunch of bumpkins and schmoes pretending to be journalists and critics.

I think it's silly that "Women on the Verge of a Nervos Breakdown" got all of those nominations. I think Patti got a nomination because she is the "Legendary Patti Lupone." Laura Benanti was the only actor who had potentital for a Tony in that musical. Interesting that Norbert Leo Butz and Victoria Clark are nomianted for Lead Acotr and Lead Actress. I thought Carl Hanraty (from "Catch Me if You Can" and the Mother Superior ("Sister Act") were supporting roles. I am happy for Patina Miller, Sutton Foster, Laura Osnes, Chestor Gregory, Colin Donnell, and Aaron Tveit.

I agree with the majority of these, but two really rankle. Catch Me If You Can was overlooked in Best New Musical, while Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown got recognized? Really! I realize that CMIYC got mixed reviews, but the reviews AND audience reaction for Women was downright tragic. And didn't it shutter early because of this? And while pretty much everyone agrees that Laura Benanti was the best thing about it, what the heck is Patti LuPone doing up in that category as well? Do even her die hard fans think that performance was nomination worthy?

Posted: 4/26/11 at 11:57amI didn't notice Barkin at the bottom when I saw the other names. Thanks! This is going to be an incredible year for the Tony nominations. What a competition this season. It's almost a shame there can't be 7 or 8 nominations for the acting categories this year. Some great performances will definitely get left out.

Posted: 4/26/11 at 11:57amI have to admit that I happy to see the love for the Women on the Verge score and performances. I was NOT a fan of the show, but have been loving listening to the cast recording for the past week. I am not sure whether it was the book or the staging, but the isolated score is pretty damn good...IMHO, naturally.

There are some crazy nominations here. I haaaaate that Rory O'Malley wasn't nominated. But I, for one, am very pleased that Women on the Verge got the nod over Catch Me. I really do think it's the better show.
Also hate the lack of love for Jerusalem, though. And the lack of Rannells in Leading Actor.
But these are the same people who gave the most nominations to 9 to 5, so I wasn't expecting a whole lot.

I can't figure out if Barkin receiving a special award is more or less prestigious than being in a competitive category.
Three featured performers from Anything Goes is a little ridiculous.
As usual, it's the Outer Space Awards in a lot of categories!

Well I certainly enjoyed her performance. And as several posters (including myself) have said, so much of Benanti's appeal in the show was written into the role. I don't know if the same is true of LuPone and Lucia.
That being said, I think LuPone's entering the phase in her career where her name might tip the scales for a nomination.

I am happy for Chestor Gregory even though he is not suppose to be that great in this musical. I thought he was excellent in "Dreamgirls" and was very nice at the stage door.
ETA: Just read BWW user reviews of Chestor in the first preview thread and they were not great, so I changed my post.

I will say that I'm thrilled that John McMartin was nommed. He gave the daffiest, most delightful performance in a role that is usually unnoticeable. I'll go out on a limb and say I hope he's nommed for a Tony...and wins. That man deserves to be honored for a lifetime of extraordinary work.
Also happy for the recognition given to Osnes, who also found depth in a role not known for it.

Posted: 4/26/11 at 12:36pmInteresting for BOM Tony precedent that, after all the assumptions that Rannells is a shoo-in and Gad a maybe, it's the other way around here.

Posted: 4/26/11 at 12:39pmNothing is interesting about these awards. They obviously didn't see these shows and just went on what they thought they knew. Patti Lupone is Patti Lupone and she's amazing but come on, the only role and actor memorable in that show is Benati.

Posted: 4/26/11 at 12:45pmI'm thrilled about the well-deserved nominations for Women on the Verge. My favorite show of the season. And I personally know at least one out-of-town critic who agrees with me. And he's not even a bumpkin OR a schmoe. Tee hee! Listening to the CD only reminds me how wonderful the score is. I do hope it wins for score and for Benanti.
