I am thrilled for the VERGE and SISTER ACT love.
I can only hope that the David Yazbek nomination is a sign of things to come next week. But I'm not getting my hopes up.
And regarding Rory O'Malley: I cannot help but think his buzz is mostly fan produced. I don't really see him getting a Tony nomination either. But anything is possible.

Posted: 4/26/11 at 1:06pmI think O'Malley stands a better chance at a nomination if Gad and Rannels are both deemed leads. If one of them (likely Gad) is bumped to featured, his chances for a nomination diminish.

The audiences I know (including me) certainly didn't like either Wonderland or Baby It's You, so saying that "the audiences "seem to love both" is just inaccurate.
But yes, there are audiences who seem to like anything you put in front of them, as long as it doesn't challenge or confuse them and takes very little concentration. It's much like plopping an infant down in front of a Teletubbies video to distract them for a few hours.

"No love for Wonderland and/or Baby, It's You!"
Beth Leavel got a nomination and the show got Outstanding Costume Design, but that's it. I don't think "Wonderland" got one.

Posted: 4/26/11 at 3:32pmIJay889, I think you are wrong. The fans love him obviously but he has been singled out in many reviews, including Brantley's review, and has the lead part in one of the funniest numbers in the whole show. the audience leaves remembering him just as much as the leads.

I didn't.
Turn It Off” is a hilarious chorus-line piece about repression, performed by the (all-male Mormon) missionaries and destined to make a star of its lead singer and dancer, Rory O’Malley (whose character is repressed in his own special way).
That is ALL Brantley wrote about O'Malley. He didn't even write anything about his performance.

Fair enough! I misinterpreted Brantley's comment. I see what you're saying.

Droll, JR, droll.
But right you are - I totally missed the sarcasm in your post, and for a horrified moment, thought you actually believed audiences were enjoying those dreadful turkeys. My apologies.

Was Women on the Verge really that good? wow. So sorry I missed it.
I can't believe Wonderland didn't get Outstanding New Score.
I guess Scottsboro Boys got overshadowed by all of the new shows out now.

Not only was Scottsboro Boys eligible last season, it won the OCC Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical (tied with Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson).

Now I loved Women on The Verge ... but really people? I'm sorry, but Benanti did not do anything special with that role. She lucked out with the best song and lines... and took the easy road by making it all a joke.
"Hopefully this is the beginning of a sweep for Laura Benanti."
Have you seen most of the other featured females currently in shows?

The design stuff and most of the cast for both shows weren't eligible, but Joshua Henry was. Also the shows were eligible for Best New Broadway Musical. They just weren't nominated.

So happy for WOMEN ON THE VERGE.
It's one of those shows that was so wildly panned here and in the criticsphere, that when I saw it I couldn't connect what I was seeing with the bad word of mouth I'd heard. It was a good, funny, emotional show.
Good for them!

So happy for all the WOTV success with the Outer Critics Circle.
Laura WILL win featured actress at the Tony's and I am praying WOTV at least gets a Best Score Nom because in my opinion WOTV had the best score of the entire season. Maybe not the most perfect show but the OBC album has been on repeat... its a wonderful score.
