#12018 Tony Nominations Poll
Posted: 4/3/18 at 1:05am

I did this last year and it seemed to get a fairly positive response. Everyone seems to have a ton of opinions about Tony nominations so I wanted to go ahead and make a few polls just to gauge where the prospective nominees stand. It could be fun to see what happens when the nominees are announced. Please vote however you desire (i.e. who you think will be nominated or what we personally like the most). Feel free to participate! Polls close on May 1.

Are there really only 5 eligible actors for Best Lead Actor in a Musical this year? That's bananas!

Also, it might be really smart for Frozen to put Levy in Featured or Mean Girls to do so for Louderman because Featured Actress seems WIDE open. I don't even know who I'd predict to win out of the listed women. DeBose? I see Mendez getting a lot of support, but while I think she's generally genius, I didn't think her Carrie Pipperidge was particularly strong.

I pray Kenita Miller gets in for ONCE ON THIS ISLAND. She is the heart of that production.

I think for that Catergory the five will be Ariana Debose, Kenita Miller, Taylor Louderman, Lindsay Mendez, and Lea Salgona

I've actually been wondering if they'll be considering Elsa featured or leading. Honestly hard to say.

I also wonder if they'll consider Jelani Alladin as lead.

I know I felt the same way when I saw the show back in November.

Kenita and Lea for sure! What about Diana?   I can't imagine they would leave her out?

I'm so happy to see all the love for Kenita Miller. I agree that she's deserving, but I worried her role would be overlooked because Merle Dandridge and Lea Salonga have showier parts. And having not seen My Fair Lady yet, I have no idea about Rigg. I do find it a little hard to believe Fleming will show up just because she doesn't really act at all, only being called on to sing one fun song prettily and then one moving song that...I've seen be more moving. I don't think she's bad! I just have trouble imagining her being nominated.

My choices would be Kenita, DeBose, Lily Cooper, Ashley Park, and Kate Rockwell (again, not having seen MFL). But I'd be surprised if more than two of them actually got in.

I think Mean Girls will fill the category with 3 nominees and the other 2 will likely be Salonga and Mendez.

I'd strongly suggest adding Diana Rigg to the featured actress in a musical list.  It is hard to imagine her not getting a nomination and she even has a shot at winning.
True, it's not a singing or dancing role, but Peg Murray won for her Fraulein Kost in CABARET, a small role with barely anything "musical" to it.
And though Mrs. Higgins is also not a huge role, performing it well got Gladys Cooper an Oscar nomination.

Have you actually seen Diana Rigg's performance? I'm a big fan of hers (she was superb in the 1987 West End FOLLIES), But honestly in MFL, her costumes and wigs do all the work. Frankly, if I hadn't known it was Rigg in advance, I'd have wondered all night "who is that sweet lady in the giant Gibson Girl wig?" Not likely to get a nomination.

Very surprised at the low praise for Tony Yazbeck. And I would replace one of either Chuck Cooper or Uranowitz with Michael Xavier.

I'm hoping that we get a lot of Once On This Island love this year! I haven't heard a lot about My Fair Lady yet and Carousel seems to be underwhelming everyone. I was nervous that OOTI, an amazing reinterpretation of an already underrated show, would get overshadowed by big revivals of classics (I.e. Falsettos and Hello Dolly). Thankfully, this season has been pretty weak and I'm sure we can count on a bunch of acting nominations and possibly even wins. I'm sure Hailey, Alex, and Lea will get nominated and they all very well could win.

I Highly doubt Kilgore would beat out Lenk.

The closest chance to a performance award for OOTI is maybe Alex Newell for featured actor.

Kilgore will get an extremely well-deserved nomination, but Katrina has the lead actress statue in the bag.

Concierge, while I am hoping for Lenk to win, it seems like there could be a race between her and Ambrose.

That's very true, Les. I think I'm overly confident for Lenk in my mind because to me, she is so definitively Dina. I simply cannot imagine anybody else in that role. Don't get me wrong: I'm a huge fan of Ambrose's stunning and unique performance as Eliza, but for me, it doesn't override the transcendence Lenk achieves over at the Barrymore.

That’s because Prince of Broadway is long gone and likely to stay that way. If it does get a nomination, it will undoubtedly be for Yazbeck, but the chances just aren’t good.

There is not a snowball's chance in hell that Hailey Kilgore can actually win the best actress statue. The only competition in that category at this point, as others above said, is Katrina Lenk and Lauren Ambrose (the latter of course pending reviews, with the former still absolutely having the competitive edge, imo).

I think Hailey Kilgore is up against the fact that Ti Moune is not really a starring role in OOTI. She's offstage for the first 2 songs, and only gets one pure solo from beginning to end. Everything else she sings is part of various ensemble pieces. I thought she was just dazzling, but unluckily in a company chock full of dazzlements.

Frankly even Dena is not truly a starring part in THE BAND'S VISIT (she's also offstage for large swaths of the proceedings), but she certainly gets all the best songs, her imprint on the evening is astonishing, and no other woman get to shine like she does, so the evening certainly belongs to Katrina Lenk, hands down.

Much as I loved Lauren Ambrose in MFL (which really is the starring role of that piece), the magnetic field that is Katrina Link will carry the day on Tonys Night.

I haven't, Someone, I'm simply going by it being Rigg and some of the very glowing reviews of her on the MFL thread.  You may well be right that her performance is not particularly Tony-impressive, but neither are a lot of the performances one can choose from on Pollster2's poll.  In any event, I see no reason for her being omitted on the poll.

Having said all of that, might not the fact that if you, being a huge fan of Rigg's, wouldn't have known it were her just from her performance alone speak highly of her performance rather than diminishing it?

I loved Rigg in My Fair Lady, but she has maybe five minutes of stage time and she doesn't do much aside from grace us with her majestic presence and rock some killer costumes. It's a bit of a weak field so she might slip in, but I don't see her winning.

Diana Rigg doesn't even sing a word in MFL.
