This may be in another thread, but I haven't seen it.
Since it was a sure thing that the 3 Billys would win, wht weren't they coached with acceptance speeches instead of looking lost up there not know what to say or do. The kind thing would have been for the TV director to have cut to the next seqment. Someone obviously dropped the ball.
Side note, with that production number which did not mean anything to someone not familiar with the show, people I've talked to say they were not moved to see the show, just the opposite, avoid it.

Posted: 6/9/09 at 12:25amIt didn't seem coached to me which was bizarre, because I really thought someone would have taken the liberty to do so. It was cute for the first thirty seconds, but it became very awkward and trite. I was not amused. I know they're just kids so I don't blame them. It's the adults around them who should have helped them to have something thoughtful and organized to say.

Posted: 6/9/09 at 12:30amAs someone who was there, it was both very cute and very cut off. I mean, any nominee gets the "WRAP IT UP!!" teleprompter cue, but the music playing and the cutoff definitely seems to be in the hands of the powers that be. Of course, the fact that there were three of them doesn't mean they get three times the time, but they of course went a little over what might be given a single person. That said, after Kiril got the (perfect) last word in, David tried to say something else, but the mic had already been cut. From what I've seen on the telecast, the camera cut that out, but still, giving them less time would have been terrible, in my book.

Posted: 6/9/09 at 12:30amI thought they were so adorable too! I also thought it was great that they thanked their teachers on their own, when teachers are usually absent amongst the thanks of winners.

:::As someone who was there, it was both very cute and very cut off.:::
I don't understand what that means. I keep reading that sentence over and over. "As someone who was there..." yes? As someone who was there, what? "... it was both very cute and very cut off..." What was? I don't, what? It was very cute and very cut off for home viewers as well. I just don't understand what the first clause has to do with the second.
::but the music playing and the cutoff definitely seems to be in the hands of the powers that be.::
As someone who was there, does this strike you as a particularly unusual arrangement? I think it would be fun if the cutoff were in the hands of Amy Poehler's Aunt Linda watching from home, but, I don't see that happening.

Namo, darling, you're very good at bitching, and even occasionally good at finding a target at which to bitch. I hope you think my lazy syntax counts as one of those worthy targets.
Let me reconstruct my sentences in a more appropriate way. I was right by that podium at the Tonys, and so I know that their time was cut off. I thought their speech was very cute. I've watched the speech online, and so I know how the camera angles helped David Alvarez's attempted closing remarks be totally ignored by the telecast.
Also, I should have referenced the video shown in Radio City, which emphasized to the nominees that they had exactly 90 seconds from the time their names were called to deliver their speeches. That warning indicated that the time before the strings came in to play them off was empirically determined. However, in a few major categories, including the Billys winning, that 90 second limit didn't apply, as someone involved in the production of the show decided that it would be better to manually choose a cutoff point.
I'm ever so sorry to have been misleading with my poorly chosen word order. I hope I can be forgiven.

"My mom, my dad, my brother and my sister."
"Mom, dad, two sisters."
"Mom, dad, three sisters."
They were great.

although the best thing about Anna Paquin's speech was not her weeping and sobbing, but the fact that she walked off the stage and back down to her seat with her Oscar.
but if we're making a video, definitely throw in Daisy Eagan's Tony speech, too.

Posted: 6/9/09 at 9:25amI thought the thing that made their acceptance so wonderful was the fact that it WASN'T prearranged and rehearsed. It felt natural and totally believable. Watching these three wonderfully talented boys be absolutely tongue-tied was adorable and I wouldn't have wanted it to be any other way.

Actually, their acceptance speech WAS prepared...by the show's director. Unfornutaely, that's not the speech they gave! They were actually very overwhelmed that they completely forgot it.

I thought their speech was perfect. I loved that they each thanked their families and their teachers, and Kiril's final shout-out was the perfect end to the speech. It was a historic moment and I think it was wonderful to see.

"My mom, my dad, my brother and my sister."
"Mom, dad, two sisters."
"Mom, dad, three sisters."
In that moment, they completely won me over.

Sorry to disappoint you, but they didn't deliver the speech that was prepared for them (they thanked people specifically the director told them not to)...they genuine froze when they got up there they were absolutely overwhelmed.

Stephen Daldry told them who not to thank?
