'9 To 5' The Musical. OBC Recording!!!!

The in-store arrival of the original Broadway cast recording of Dolly Parton's 9 to 5: The Musical has been delayed two weeks to July 28.

Representatives for the Broadway production state that the disc will still be available to order on-line beginning July 14 (the original release date for the album) at Dolly Parton's official website DollyPartonMusic, and will also be available for purchase at the Marquis Theatre, the home of 9 to 5 on Broadway, prior to the July 28 nationwide in-store arrival.

Set for release on the Dolly Records label, the original Broadway cast of 9 to 5 recorded the album May 3-4 at Legacy Recording Studios in Manhattan.

The 9 to 5 recording is produced by musical director Stephen Oremus and Dolly Parton. Alex Lacamoire (music director and co-orchestrator for the Grammy winning original cast recording of In the Heights) is co-producer, and the album was recorded and mixed by Frank Filipe

It leaked a few days ago, then they started selling it in the theatre. I've had it a good wee while, it's fantastic!
Stephanie does a fantaaaastic Get Out And Stay Out!!
PM me if you're wanting a copy, but obviously I completely support buying the CD when the actual hard copies become available.

The more i listen to it them more i have to stick by my opinion of the show at been fun and with 3 great leads but the score lets it down.
So many of the songs on there sound like fillers, i think our Dolly could have given them something a little better

I do however love 9 to 5, Get Out Stayout, Hart to Hart, Shine Like The Sun, I Just Might.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

I agree 100%, I saw the show a few weeks ago and was very disappointed with the score. I thought the three leading ladies were brilliant, some of the material was very witty and funny (although not all brilliant) but the score was what really let it down. I think it works even less on the CD, as many of the songs work even less without the visual to go with them.

I also agree with you on favourite songs, you've nailed the five best and the rest do really feel like fillers.

I like the recording as a whole, I like the overall sound of it. Get out and Stay out is amazing, you can hear Stephanie acting her ass off (even though I don't like her that much, she sounds incredible). Just one minor niggle - I don't like the way Stephanie sings 'I'll just have to fake it' in 9 to 5, I rather the way she does it live. That's just personal preference and me being picky and slightly obsessive over the way she did it when I saw it. Heh.

Im suprised she could not come up with something better

The book is strong, the ladies are great, the set brilliant but the score is pretty naff

I think the show will play out the year then vanish from Broadway, its attendenace and grosses keep taking a tumble

I listened to the sample tracks on the shows website. Onm what I've heard, I don't think I'll be rushing to buy this!

The songs appear to be very similar and some of the lyrics are banal in their rhymning.

I'll wait and see what comes my way!!!

I so wanted this to be good, but as for a London transfer, I don't hold out much hope!

75% bums on seats, but only about 50-55% gross potential (45% last week). Not great at all for a big show like this where most shows aim to play to 75-80% until they recoup, and there'll be the extra transfer costs from the LA run to factor in to the capitalisation. I'm going to run some boring figures through in my head...

Last week's gross was about £420k - it used to be easier to work the figures out from BWW when they reported net figures, but there you go. Take off taxes and credit card transactions (I'm guessing around 18%?) and you're looking at around £340k net. For a big show like this based on a film you've got a royalty package probably around about the 13-14% mark at least if they're keeping costs down, so we're down to about £300k before you can even take the running costs of the show into account.

Wicked's running costs are about £430k a week according to someone on the Broadway board; I don't know much about 9 to 5's physical production, cast size etc. but I understand it's a pretty big show, so I'd be fairly certain it's more than £300k - more like £350k, so they've lost a fairly big chunk of money if my rough estimates are right, and haven't made that much even in good weeks.

Don't get me wrong, it's not doing massively better or worse than a lot of other shows; the only obvious hits of the season gross-wise are God of Carnage, Billy Elliot and Hair. But other shows are probably just about scraping by - Next to Normal, for instance, will have pretty low running costs, so its seemingly small £260k gross, although probably still losing money, is only losing 1 or 2 grand a week, and the upswing in bums on seats means the producers could probably raise the ticket prices a bit to compensate in the short term if it continues.

Okay, that was boring, and the figures are probably wrong. Sorry. Might listen to the album now.

Hello. Just a quickie, is it worth getting this recording. Don't have much money (being a penniles student and all) so want to make sure it's worth the money. Thanks.

I saw this in NY last week, very much enjoyed it for the music as well as the performance so I'd say it's worth it-though obviously not if Dolly isn't your thing! Alison Janey's singing isn't the best in the world but the other two ladies voices certainly make up for it-as do the songs themselves imo.
