good to know that she was lucky enough to be so picky... not setting a very good example for her students, though.

as a struggling actor (which I'm assuming you are or will be) it MUST be acknowledged that a job is a job, whether it is starring in a sh*tty regional musical in central Florida or being a 2 bit part in some campy musical in Vegas.

Well, I would tend to agree with you (with some exceptions - I'm not about to go do a topless revue in Wisconsin), but seeing as she's a successful, well-known actress, I think she's allowed to be a bit choosier :)

Well that's different, of course. But just sayin - a Broadway show is a Broadway show.

Again, if it were me, I would have signed that contract before they even finished offering it to me. But she's had her fair share of Broadway shows and she'd rather work on projects she's more passionate about.

I just don't get what makes 9 TO 5 work you up? It is a fun musical with enjoyable music. It never tried to be anything it wasn't

It's not 9 to 5 that works me up. I enjoy the fans going apoplectic at even the slightest whiff of dislike (MamasTalkingAnnoying even had threads deleted where the show was criticized).

I have no problem with lighthearted, less heavy fare. I just don't think that 9 to 5 is that good. The songs are repetitive and forced ("Around Here" is annoying and pointless, "Backwoods Barbie" feels shoehorned in and is a song about Dolly Parton, not Doralee Rhodes), etc, etc.

For the record, I always thought this was a great idea for a musical. I just don't think any great ideas came out of it.

You're not a fan of country music, are you.

"Backwoods Barbie" is a country song... plain and simple.

And there are A LOT of songs in shows that are annoying and pointless. Try half of the songs in "Next To Normal", "Shrek", and "Rock of Ages" ! What's your point?

Country song =/= Frivolous, autobiographical and lyrically awful song

country songs are MUCH different than any other genre. there's an art to it.

Go listen to Woody, George, Kenny, etc. and then come back and I can teach you about it PG2!!

That'd be fun.

I have no problem with country music. It doesn't change the fact that Backwoods Barbie is a song about Dolly Parton shoehorned into the show to give a Doralee a backstory.

Forced character songs are always shoved into different musicals...

Why is 9 TO 5 the exception? They can't have a song purposely shoved in to explain a character?

I know it isn't the greatest writing but you are SO quick to point out the flaws of this show and, yet, your complaints are the same complaints I could probably make against any musicals you actually like (do you like any musicals?).

Phyll, ignore this loser. It's our old friend TooDarnHot, back under yet another name.

The difference here, dearie, is that the song was written by and about Dolly Parton and has no business being in the musical...especially since it's terrible.

No, I like no musicals. Not a one.

I know it isn't the greatest writing but

And there you have it.

Seriously, the fans of this show are unhinged.

your complaints are the same complaints I could probably make against any musicals you actually like

I mean, you probably can. Just because I have affinity something doesn't make it a quality work.

No, there was a clear bias among the nomination committee against 9 to 5.

What was the bias? Why were they against it? Is Dolly the new Disney?

Ignore Jazzy. It's just our old friend Charlie, stirrin' up a fresh batch of vitrol.

Except this time, he's pretending to be a fan of Rock of Ages now that the show is more popular.

as a struggling actor (which I'm assuming you are or will be) it MUST be acknowledged that a job is a job, whether it is starring in a sh*tty regional musical in central Florida or being a 2 bit part in some campy musical in Vegas.

That's a keeper!

Anyway, I haven't seen 9 to 5 or Shrek live, so maybe I would enjoy them more in the theatre, but from what I have seen of both shows, I put them pretty much on par with the likes of Legally Blonde. Fluffy, fun and entertaining, but not extraordinary.

Honestly, I'm not surprised. I have to say I was disappointed by 9 to 5. It was fun, but not great. Liked the sets, liked the projections, thought performances were good but not great (I would have nominated Hilty over Janney, but that's just me), choreography was uninspired, music was okay, but I HATED the sound. It made the show sound too much like you were watching a drag performance with everyone on stage lipsynching. It's just too over-produced sounding.

The problem with all this talk of bias is that awards and nominations are SUBJECTIVE. And every time something doesn't go as planned, people bitch about bias, or homophobia or whatever.

If awards for shows were a foregone conclusion, why even go the the pretext of having nominees?

9 to 5 is not a perfect musical, but at least one could see that some imagination went into the whole enterprise unlike that steaming turd of a "musical," Shrek which was a carbon copy of the damn movie with some songs thrown in.

If 9 to 5 got shut out to really good shows i don't think it would be as big of a deal but Rock of Ages?? I doubt the Tony voters even went to see 9 to 5 or half the shows they voted for.

a carbon copy of the damn movie with some songs thrown in.

But, with the exception of a few tweaks here and there, can't the same be said for 9 to 5?

Absolutely, down to Janney pushing around the stretcher in a highly condensed version of the hospital scene.

I liked 9 to 5 but didnt think it was great (and yah. kinda a carbon copy of the movie) but at least overall, it was still better than Shrek (lol, turd IS the best way to describe that).

Still, i didn't think 9 to 5's sets overall were that memorable so i'm glad it didn't get nominated.

I really enjoyed aspects of 9 to 5 that should've been rewarded. I thought it definitely deserved a Best Musical nod, a set design nod, and a Best Book nod. I thought the book was INCREDIBLY witty, and laugh-out-loud funny. I don't really have complaints about the acting categories, Kudisch and Janney are the stars and are the only ones deserving of the nods, IMO. I knew as soon as they shoved all three girls into leading that it was only going to be Janney. If Block and Hilty had been featured, maybe one of them could've gotten in over Damiano or something, but sadly, that was not the case.

"?I was such a wreck I couldn?t sleep, so I went out to walk my dog in Riverside Park. I decided that when I found out whatever happened had happened, I just wanted to be with my dog in the rain! I had crazy dreams about it. My friend eventually called me on my cell phone and I got the news. Of course it?s very bittersweet because I feel the whole show really deserves to be nominated. I wish that the three girls could be nominated the same way the Billy Elliot boys were! We?re such a team, you know, the three of us, so I feel I definitely share this with [co-stars] Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty. I just adore them. I don?t have much time to sit back and enjoy this since it?s a very busy week, but I?ll have an extra lift in my spirit. It?s really thrilling to get a Tony nomination, it?s a wonderful thing to happen for anybody, especially in musical theater. I?ve never done it before, so to be recognized for it is a great accomplishment. I feel proud to represent the show, and excited for [fellow nominees] Marc Kudisch, Dolly Parton and Andy Blankenbuehler. Doing the show, that?s how I?ll celebrate. Just doing the show and having fun doing it, like I do every night.? - Allison Janney

"?My girlfriend and I were watching the television this morning, so that?s how I got the news. You know, I?ve been through this before [for Thoroughly Modern Millie and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang]. It always feels sort of the same way?great, now my girlfriend?s making faces at me! But it?s true. The first time is always the coolest because it?s the first time. The second time it?s like, ?OK, it wasn?t a fluke that I was nominated.? And this time it was sort of that thing where you wake up and go, ?Well, I will be or I won?t be.? There?s the personal side to a nomination like this where you feel privileged, and I do?I feel privileged every time I get a job offer! This is icing on an already very big cake. But if I?m honest, on the other side, I have friends in the show who did not get nominated whose work I feel is magnificent. So I always find it a challenge, because we?re all in this together. I?m not out onstage alone, I?m with those starring women every night, and I owe much of my performance to [director] Joe Mantello as well. So it almost feels like just my right arm and right leg got nominated. My right arm and right leg are doing half a cartwheel though!? - Marc Kudisch

I love this cast =)
