"That paragraph makes me think you are extremely young."

Depends what you consider young, I'll be 30 on Saturday, so you can decide if that is extremely young for yourself.

I'm sorry to hear that you're 30 and have such little understanding and/or compassion.

Why don't you tell me what's artistic about misrepresenting a serious disease?

Anakela, when I worked it one night, the majority of people I heard talking at intermission didn't like it. I would think there are actually a good number who aren't fans.

Interesting- I feel like everyone I know who has seen it has loved it, for some it's bordering on some kind of *religious experience* almost. I can count on one hand the number of people I know who didn't like it, I always feel in the minority about that.

(However I will have no problems when Alice Ripley walks away with her Tony- I agree that she is doing brilliant work on that stage.)

What is misrepresenting to you, may not be to another person. As I said, they will never be able to please everyone. Plenty of people who have mental illnesses think it was represented quite well.

I just think its ridiculous that people are holding a broadway show up to this unreachable level of accuracy, where it has to be some torch barer for mental illnesses. Its a show, entertainment...they did the best they could to represent a family dealing with the reprecussions of mental illness and loss, they never set out to make a documentary with music on mental illnesses.

" they never set out to make a documentary with music on mental illnesses."

How would you know this? That's exactly what they did do.

I have a problem with your calling me and the others "nit pickers" because we have issues with the show.

Wicked rocks, you don't have to read the thread any further if you don't like a debate over this show.

"That's exactly what they did do. "

You think that show was a documentary on mental illness with music?

Uh, dont see that at all...it really is a show about how the family DEALS with Diana's mental illness and their loss. It isnt ABOUT the mental illness.

I should correct myself-no, it isn't a "documentary" but it certainly is a show about mental illness. At least is was when I saw it off broadway. Unless they deleted the subjects of treatment, behavior, psychiatrist, medication, shock treatments, etc. , then I still think it's about mental illness.

Well, if you think it is more about the mental illness, than the effect the mental illness I dont know what to say to you. I really think you missed the point of the show though.

You cannot separate the two. You cannot possibly portray a family's dealing with any disease without treating the subject of the disease. The audience needs to know what the family is dealing with. We see Diana suffering from a disease, and everything she has to go through living with it. Perhaps that point eluded you.

And no, I did not miss the point of the show. My family has been living the show for over 50 years.

Because this topic is so meaningful to me, I'm going to stop providing entertainment for the troops here and leave the discussion. I've made my point.

Hey BoyDownStairs - STOP!! You're so annoying.

"As I said, they will never be able to please everyone. Plenty of people who have mental illnesses think it was represented quite well. "

Oh, you have a lot of experience with mental illnesses? You sure act like you have one. Jane, Shubrt, Eve, Anake, and Foster are all completely accurate in their convictions... You can't hide this fact. If you weren't a crazy freak about N2N, you'd have to acknowledge this.

You are just blinded by the ridiculous bullsh*t. Seems they've brainwashed you! Enjoy that mental illness, turd.

Ignore Jazzy. It's just our old friend Charlie, stirrin' up a fresh batch of vitrol.

Although I have to say making THIS new persona like Rock of Ages was a smart choice.

How so?

No one here thinks it is a "masterpiece" or an "amazing" piece of theatre.... However, I have heard N2N fans say that about their little beloved musical!

Phyllis - I think you're just bitter that your wigs, face surgery, and breast implants can't even compete with Dolly's modifications. Heh.

Yes, that would be exactly it. I have no grasp of what makes material quality, it's that I don't like like an overprocessed alien that's getting to me.

Obviously I am kidding, Phyllis.

I just don't get what makes 9 TO 5 work you up? It is a fun musical with enjoyable music. It never tried to be anything it wasn't.

Fabulous cast, as well!!

SHREK was the piece of theatre that was overhyped and turned out to be complete & total sh*t. Why aren't you whining about that show, Philly Poo?

See, Jazz, my problem with 9 to 5 is that for me, it didn't even do "fun and enjoyable" well. It seemed slapped together and overprocessed and thrown up on the stage for Joe Tourist to lap up. I think Shrek is a more cohesive product. But to each his own.

Shrek was very good, TheCharleston, and you'll have to stop repeating the same talking points and avoiding the question every time brings up your previous personas if you want to throw us off the trail.

Perhaps I'm biased because I am a Dolly fan and I am a big fan of musical comedies/"bubblegum" pieces.

I didn't say it was cohesive, but I also didn't feed into all of the hype that Phyllis is claiming there was. I heard that it was fun and enjoyable.

And regardless ~ The cast is superb. Their performances weren't enough for you to at least partially enjoy the show??

But I'm sure if you're a fan of bubblegum, you can tell the difference between good and bad bubblegum. If you enjoyed it, I'm happy for you. The cast is incredibly talented, yes, but I wish they'd had better material to work with! My audition coach, who was asked to audition for Roz, actually turned the audition down because she didn't think the material was worth it and didn't want to embarrass herself. I've spoken at length about my issues with the material on other threads. But yes, the performances were as good as they could have been.

"Oh, look! NEXT TO NORMAL's set is connected to the side of my building!"

Although I somewhat disagree with what you said, this comment made me laugh.
