#19 to 5: SHUT OUT big time !!!!

Posted: 5/5/09 at 8:40amnot big time, It didn't get musical, and two of the Best Actress nods, but it still got 4 or 5 nods.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 9:02amWell, there were many who thought the set and lighting designs were the best of the season and whatnot. No noms for those, either.

Yeah, I thought it would win set design, that or Shrek, which also was snubbed.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 9:31amTheir set design was snubbed, it's unreal, and I am SHOCKED that Megan, Stephanie, and Kathy got NOTHING.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 9:41amSeriously? No set design? I could understand if they don't care about transitions.

Yet NEXT TO NORMAL's set, which is three levels of metal scaffolding, was nominated.
*looks out window*
Oh, look! NEXT TO NORMAL's set is connected to the side of my building!

Posted: 5/5/09 at 9:46amI think I'm the only one who didn't think 9 to 5's set was the greatest (and I did love the show) I just didn't see anything terribly interesting about it, except for the Jumbo tron backdrop. Billy Elliott's set was far more visually pleasing to me.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 9:47amI am still in shock over these nominations. I wish 9 to 5 the best though, I'm sure they'll run a long time.

I thought 9 to 5 or Shrek would win based on the Mary Poppins theory, but I personally loved the Billy set. I thought it was more imaginative and creative.
Foster, they like unit sets sometimes (see: Spring Awakening), but I'm surprised it was Next to Normal's they liked and not Hair's. Not complaining, just surprised.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 9:56amBest set doesn't translate to Most complicated engineering. Next to Normal's set is very effective.
#13re: 9 to 5: SHUT OUT big time !!!!
Posted: 5/5/09 at 9:57amOh please, 9 to 5's set isn't just complicated engineering. It's GREAT, and all the hate is so ridiculous. The hate for that show in general is ****ing ridiculous.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 10:00amI don't think it's hate. I think it was just overhyped from the start and it didn't deliver the goods.

No, there was a clear bias among the nomination committee against 9 to 5.
15 Drama Desk nominations vs. 4 Tony nominations? Seriously?
The nomination committee wanted to send a clear message that they are not impressed with 9 to 5 by giving noms to shows like ROA and BE that 9 to 5 deserved.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 10:08amThis is sad. It's such a great show and I loved it in L.A.!!! How did Steph and Megan get snubbed over Stockard Channing?
#19re: 9 to 5: SHUT OUT big time !!!!
Posted: 5/5/09 at 10:12amI think it's weird that this show got snubbed so much, but honestly it doesn't need Tony's to keep it open, it's going to do just fine.

The same thing happened last year, with A Catered Affair getting the most Drama Desk nominations, and getting snubbed at the Tonys, and it happened the year before that with Lovemusik.
Lots of Drama Desk nominations does not always equal lots of Tony nominations.
#21re: 9 to 5: SHUT OUT big time !!!!
Posted: 5/5/09 at 10:15amDoes anyone think 9 to 5 will still perform at the Tonys? I know that obviously only the nominees perform, but last year Young Frank, Mermaid and A Catered Affair (I think?) each got at least a short performance.
#22re: 9 to 5: SHUT OUT big time !!!!
Posted: 5/5/09 at 10:17amI think they might since they were nominated for Best Score. They should at least give it some exposure. I'm mad right now, very mad.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 10:18amI refuse to let a group of people who clearly have a political agenda get me upset. It was very unlikely that all three women would grab spots being lumped in the same category as they were, so even though I think all three were more than deserving,I'm not surprised to see Allison as the solo name up there. And I suppose it's less awkward for 2 to be left out than 1, right? The design teams deserved more love too, but I'm not going to take away from the four nominations it did get by moaning about what it didn't (at least not publically). CONGRATS to DOLLY, MARC, ANDY, AND ALLISON =)

I hope they perform at the telecast.
How ROCK OF AGES and SHREK got nominated over 9 TO 5, I'll never understand.
Ditto to Stockard Channing over Hilty/Block.
