I know this sounds churlish after my moaning about the rain which thank heaven never came...but I was also among the ones who were a bit dissapointed in the Flea Market this year Even though I had a great time with a buddy there, all we bought were a few CDs - the great oddball variety of stuff that was offered in years past was in very short supply. And the shows that had wonderfully inventive booths when they were 'new' kinda ran out of inspiration this time around. And were there fewer booths there this year? I remember when Rosie had a booth (all sorts of great stuff)
And we were there at 9:00 and ALREADY it was a zoo. By noon, you could not move. I never got to the celebrity table (it's not my kinda thing) but it was unbelievably packed three rows deep with fans. I'll bet this years Flea Market had record attendance (and hopefully a record 'take')
I missed the BEAUTY AND THE BEAST chili as well, Dollypop. Though the free Italian Ices by one of the Unions (forgot which one) was a nice substitute!

Yeah, the items weren't very good this year. I lost all hope when I saw books from 1936 at one of the tables (I assumed it was from Random Ensemble Member #6's parent's basement), an In My Life sampler for $3, Wicked fan art and presents signed by the recipients (Eden/Megan), and, the best of all, a DVD of "how much I loved the show" testimonials for Blonde in the Thunderbird. I should have bought that.

There was tons of great items... some big, but tons of small, to be had this year... some of them you just REALLY had to browze for...... especially since a lot of items came and went throughout the day.

Oh no! I can't imagine someone that sent/gave them that stuff feeling that great if they saw it there.

Who saw the ugly Jesse L. Martin doll some girl gave to him?

Yeah....I've been calling that table the Wicked Garage Sale.
I've never seen more useless crap there in my entire life. Granted, what's useless to me is a prize to someone else.
I wouldn't want someones homemade drawing of Eden signed by her....

signed fan art? that's cheap
but i think the theater displays sound cool- and the cheap windowcards!
coolness
I will find a way to come next year.
And random threadjack, but did anyone see Julia Murney? If so, how's she doing?
Awesome day! It was great seeing some of you again for the first time since the picnic.
For under 20 bucks I got . . .
A Drowsy Chaperone frisbee
a Jersey Boys magnet
spamalot lip baum
sweet charity folder
lestat poster
the producers movie soundtrack
42nd street revival cd
a broadway ruler
2 raffles
It was a great day!
As for celebrity sightings:
The "white woman standby" as she calls herself from Caroline or Change, Danny Burstein, Beth Leavel, Bob Martin, and Jennifer Smith from TDC, John Tracey Egan talked to us for a while at the Producers stand, and many others that I can't recall. Oh, and "Mike" from ACL. I wanted to go up to him and be obnoxious and say "I can do that!" but chose, in better judgement, not to.
besides spending way too much money, it was a really great day overall. thankfully the weather was decent, only one point when it rained.
my findings..
- Opening Night signed by Daniel Reichard Jersey Boy tote bag (given to cast and crew)
- Jersey Boy script given to cast & crew members (as I was told by John at the table when I got it signed)
- Good Vibrations window card
- Two RENT stage shots
- 'Diva' RENT t-shirt
- Tarzan, Taboo, and Beauty and the Beast playbill (signed by Jacob)
- Opening night Jersey Boy window card
- Signed by cast Jersey Boy program
- Taboo London Sampler

I was sort of disappointed in the flea market overall this year...I didn't think the merchandise was as good as in years past, and the photo booth and celeb autograph line were ridiculously unorganized, particularly in the last two hours. At the photo booth, after about ten people, everyone else got cut off from Patrick Wilson. Waiting on the line at the 3:00 hour, they had made an announcement that for $75, pics could be done with both Anthony and Jesse. I asked a BCEFA volunteer about that so I could jump off the line and go and do that, and the girl turned to one of her fellow volunteers and they both said, "oh, he was joking". Turns out it wasn't--going over to the photo booth after I cut off from the celebrity line, it was a madhouse for Jesse...people pushing and crowding. When I made a comment to someone working at the photo booth regarding the two volunteers claiming the $75 picture was a joke, the worker pretty much gave me an "oh well" attitude. So after spending hours waiting at the photo booth and celebrity line, I came out with an unsigned poster that I paid $20 for and only one photo from the whole day.
They seriously need to work on organizing the photo booth properly.
I agree that the photo booth was logistically nightmare. For every hour, they took requests and then called out the people with the fewest requests first, leaving Edie Falco, Patrick Wilson, etc. towards the end when time was running out for the hour. That makes no sense whatsoever. If the goal of the event is to make money, they shouldn't leave the 10 people waiting for Diana DeGarmo behind while calling up a star who has 1 or 2 people waiting. That's potentially $100 lost.

I thought the Wicked table was an insult. I would have rather seen Megan take all her fans stuff and throw it in a garbage bag at curtain call on her last show than have the nerve to sign her fans gifts and have them sell it. I know if I saw something there that I made for megan being sold for somebody, then I would have like screamed.
A guy was having a fight with Michelle Dowdy at the Hairspray table saying Hailee's headshots weren't really signed by her...they were just duplicates. & Michelle reassured him she personally saw her sign all of them but he walked away complaining.

I would love to know as well.

I SAW her but didn't speak to her. She was clowning around with Scott Nevins at the celebrity table as I was leaving.

We were in the line to take a photo with her, but we literally could not get through the mass of people waiting for Harvey (who was next), so we initially missed her. We ended up convincing security to grab her for a minute so we could get our Chess benefit concert posters signed, but it was incredibly rushed, so we didn't get much time to talk to her. She looked lovely:

I think this year's LOCATION of the photo booth was a problem. In previous years it was located on 45th Street, but now Juniors has moved into the restaurant and the spot where the photo booth used to be is now Junior's bakery.
The location of the booth this year put the crowd right in the heart of Shubert Alley and made it difficult to hear names that were being called out. The auction was just a few feet away and their amplification was really intense.
The biggest highlight for me was meeting my favorite playwright, Mr. Edward Albee himself and having him sign a Playbill of The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? for me. But no one else seemed to even acknowledge his existence. People were just passing to and fro, and one woman even asked me who he was. When I told her, all she said was "Who?" and left.
I also enjoyed the Producers backstage tour. And of course, I picked up a whole stack of Playbills.

I have to say the Backstage tour was a GREAT idea. I think more shows should look into doing this...
That was the only good part of my day.

Best thing I got all day: the Sutton Foster marquee banner (that hung from the marquee after her Tony nomination) from LITTLE WOMEN. Weighs a ton, but it was a great steal and I look foward to hanging it in my apartment when I move in in a few months.
