What did you guys think?

I thought it was definitley cheesy...but I've never seen a stage production to compare it to.
It was ok but I like the stage productions I saw better.

It's horrible!! Right up there with the movie version of "Maimed"

First off, I didn't like the music or the actors.
And I think they could have done a muuch better spectacualar thing for the final song

It's a movie about dancers, but if you will notice you never actually see Audrey Landers dance.
A saw a touring production once that was great. The movie just didn't capture the energy and spirit of the show.
It really is one of the worst movie musicals out there. Please don't pass judgement on this show based on the movie, you will be depriving yourself of something incredible.

so what about the stage version was better? i'm just curious because as I said i've never seen the stage version. Did they change a lot of the things when making the movie? I would hope that the broadway actors could actually sing...and Michael Douglas just kept making me laugh because he would get angry for no reason. And the worst part was Cassie's wig in the flashback! AHHHHH!

I don't remember many details from the movie, but can just give a general impression. I don't think there were huge changes, but there was nothing to replace the thrill of seeing them all doing the singing and especially the dancing live. And the stage show flowed beautifully, while the movie didn't at all.
EVERYTHING about the stage musical was better. This movie was so disappointing. "A Chorus Line" was one of the best musicals ever on Broadway and to do what they did in this movie was a real crime.
Yeah I mean i heard all these AMAZING stories on how AMAZING A Chorus Line is so i decided to watch the movie and i was thinking "this is what's so amazing?" good to hear the show was better

so what about the stage version was better?
The song "What I Did For Love" is sung by the ensemble. The meaning of the song is what they gave up because of their love for their art, not sex between Cassie & Zach.
The Cassie solo dance in the stage show is called "Music & the Mirror". It is an awakening and epiphany for the character and is thrilling to see performed by a top notch dancer/actress. The song that replaced it in the movie wasn't nearly as exciting.

well for one they hired a director that had never directed a musical before... he didn't know how to cover the dance segments... it would have been better to follow Fred Astair's advice..and just place the camera...and get the whole body... after all it's DANCE. You gotta see the feet
number two.... the fatal flaw... they made the climax of the movie....WHAT I DID FOR LOVE about the relationship between Zach and Cassie.... in the stage musical...it's about what I did for the love of dance and theatre. After one of the dancers gets hurt and may never dance again...Zach asks everyone what they would do if they could do it all over again. "WON'T FORGET, CAN'T REGRET WHAT I DID FOR LOVE!The whole script falls apart when we change that point.
number three... (and kind of off the point) but the move ALL THAT JAZZ kind of stole a lot of the thunder... the opening of that movie is the opening that A CHORUS LINE should have had...

Thanks! Now that I think of it, I remember a fellow voice student singing "music and the mirror" at a voice recital and I really liked it. Were there any performers in the movie that had also done the broadway production? (sorry for so many questions!)

nope...by the time the movie was made....they were a little too old to play those roles...
But I got to tell you I saw a benefit in LA many years ago.... that brought all the original cast members together..(except two I think...who had died) and it was so thrilling to hear those songs sound like the album... and although I had seen many production of it... to see Donna Mckenie do MUSIC AND THE MIRROR was amazing...
every person I had seen do Cassie was good... but to watch her....you understood evey nuance of the orchestrations... with every trill in the music...her body matched it...
and to think to was doing MACK AND MABEL at goodspeed last month.... and brought down the house,....
It is horrible! Just like the movie version of 42nd street!
I wanted to puke. That's all there is to it.

The only thing about the film that was better than the original show was the song "Nothing". Otherwise, it stinks!
Sargar-What year/ month was that Newsweek?
Stage Version: A
Movie version: F
Roles were miscast in the movie, it was just poorly done overall.

Don't forget to mention that they replaced all of Michael Bennett's choreography with new choreography by then "it" guy--the choreographer of FLASHDANCE. ARGH!
Bennett had plans to do a movie, no, that would re-conceive the stage version in terms of making a movie didn't he?

One of the interesting things about the stage show was that they used movie techniques on stage. The lighting allowed for elements that you see in movies to be executed on stage.
