I saw the film adaptation of A Nice Indian Boy this weekend. Starring Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff. The romcom plot is predictable but the cast brings layers to their roles.

Has anyone also seen the play it was based on? I’m curious how the two versions of the story compare.

I haven't seen the play but saw the film the other day and fell in love with it. Honestly, it was the best Rom Com I've seen in years.

So happy to hear this. I may have mentioned this (sorry but pride takes over) but Eric Randall (co-writer/adapter) is a former student of mine. He's also one of the writers on Elsbeth.

Many sources spell the playwright's name as Madhuri Shekar.

Karan Soni plays Naveen, a gay Indian-American doctor who's never brought home a boyfriend to meet his parents. In this case, the ''nice Indian boy'' is Jay (Jonathan Groff), a white photographer who was raised by adoptive Indian parents. Based on Madhuri Shekar's play of the same name, it's been adapted for the screen by Eric Randall and directed by Rothan Sethi, Soni's real-life partner. As a charming, disarming rom-com, you might see where it's going, but you wouldn't want it to go anywhere else. ''A Nice Indian Boy'' is spiced up with a wonderful cast and touches of Bollywood, and there's plenty of humor and heart to curry your favor.

I had no clue it was originally based on a play, and I realize now she also wrote Queen, which I did enjoy quite a bit when it was off Broadway
