Looking to fill my Saturday afternoon with a Broadway show. Going to see Dear Evan Hansen that evening, so hoping to find something a little different in tone (trying not to spend my entire day sobbing). Thoughts? Suggestions?

Go see Anastasia! They do matinees at 2 PM, you should be fine. I love the show, it's a favorite of mine currently and it's just a beautiful production altogether. Though if you want something different, go see Great Comet before it goes. Waitress and Bandstand are always options as well (though Bandstand gets pretty heavy...).

I second the Anastasia recommendation! While it has its tender moments, it's very different in tone from Evan. You'll be laughing far more than crying. Sit back and enjoy the fun dance numbers and the lavish costumes!

I almost always recommend Groundhog Day on here, but on the same day as DEH? That would be a pretty loaded day of theatre.
In any event, I highly recommend The Play That Goes Wrong for some lighter fare before the show. It's hysterical, and will fully exercise your lighthearted comedy side before the emotional side. I've never laughed harder at a show!

I would second what BroadwayConcierge said about both GHD & The Play That Goes Wrong.
Although, I don't think DEH & GHD together would be too much, but I think I'd prefer to end with GHD. Since that isn't possible, if you have interest in GHD, go for it. There are interesting parallels between them.

So I'm kinda biased here, but I want to second GHD as well. I think it pairs with DEH just fine - in fact they have a lot of interesting similarities and comparisons. GHD has a similar message with a funny feel, whereas DEH is more sad but of course with a deeper meaning as well (though it has several funny scenes). So you get the different tones but also a nice comparison, and it's not one to be missed. GHD can go dark/deep at parts (which is why I love it) but ultimately you will leave with a fuller heart and in a great mood / having laughed for most of it, so I don't think it'd be too much on you. Plus, they're presented very differently in terms of style, cast, set, staging, etc.

I;d recommend The Great Comet since it's probably closing soon, or Waitress for something lighter. Also Government Inspector off-Broadway.

I had been debating between Anastasia, GHD, and The Play That Goes Wrong previously, so it makes me smile that you all seem to be on a similar page. Think I'm leaning toward GHD based on what was said. Thanks for the help, all! (And if anyone else still wants to weigh in, feel free. I'll probably wait another day before purchasing tickets.)

Groundhog Day or if you haven't seen it yet, Waitress... both should be at TKTS on Saturday and have been selling at 50% discount. . Anastasia has usually been up at TKTS for 30-40%.

I strongly vote for either Play That Goes Wrong or Bronx Tale! Both are actually quite easy to rush, so it'll save you money on tickets!
As people have mentioned Play That Goes Wrong is absolutely hilarious. Let me tell you, the first time I saw that show was in the evening after I saw DEH, and my waterproof mascara didn't run while I was crying at DEH, but it ran when I was crying from laughter at PTGW! Also, the genius original cast will only be in the States until September, so I definitely encourage you to catch them while you can! They wrote and developed this show themselves, and they made this show a sensation all over Europe!
Bronx Tale doesn't get that much love here, but I honestly think it's a good, wholesome show. Sure, it's not perfect, but it has a beyond-amazing cast, great music and choreography, and it's a good story. If you liked the film and/or the one-man show, you won't be disappointed by the musical! I know I'm the first person to recommend this show on this thread, but I hope you at least consider it, especially because it's a very easy rush!

Well, my two show day turned into a three show weekend.
To those who recommended Groundhog, thank you! So wonderfully different. The soundtrack does not do Nobody Cares justice. The visuals for that scene were some of my favorite from the entire show. Ended up winning the lottery for it as well; glad I took the time to consult you all!
Saw Bandstand in between the two shows which helped balance things out. Sad that it's closing; it has so much heart. Looking forward to seeing what Corey Cott does next. He really shines.

Skip a show and just head to Washington Square Park. Get some lunch around the area and just sit in the park and enjoy the afternoon people watching and listening to live performers (jazz, etc.). So many frequent New York visitors have never ventured away from midtown and many have never even been to Central Park. Enjoy New York City - heck, even Brooklyn (Dumbo, Williamsburg, etc.). New Yorkers NEVER venture into midtown/Times Square unless they have a show to see. Its the ****-hole of Manhattan. Visit other parts of New York City. Its a gorgeous city as long as you're nowhere near midtown/Times Square.

I recommend Come From Away or Groundhog Day. After seeing either of these shows, you will leave the theatre feeling very different (and better) than you will after Dear Evan Hansen.
