I love the Plain White T's, and the song is definitely catchy.
It seems a little earnest though.
I know it's only a minute, but I was hoping they would release a clip that would show this has some adult humor behind the kid-friendliness.
Too little to really judge, but not a great first look, imo.

Ooof. "BFF stands for us"? Not exactly the kind of lyric that's going to stand the test of time. The melody is fine....but it sure needs to take a step in another direction if they hope for any success beyond the Saturday morning cartoon variety.

I mean, I imagine with a full orchestra, it'll sound a lot less earnest/ simple.
I find it adorable. As long as there's an actual plot line and not just an Addams Family excuse of a story, we're good.

This may not come across as the height of musical theatre, but as someone who grew up with the show, I have to say it actually does remind me of the kind of catchy, goofy song they would actually have one the show.

...it's a single song. Not even the entire song.
I don't know any show where every moment of every single song in it "stands the test of time".
Not to mention that the artists were hired & encouraged to write the songs in their own style, not the style of SB. This isn't a show where all the songs are being written in the same style & with the same themes.
But, sure, the show will flop because this one song isn't Earth shattering.
(All this is, of course, ignoring that I disagree with your overall premise and think that a song with the chorus of "'BFF' That stands for us!" has the power to actually become an anthem of friendship due to its simplicity and relatability to those in all walks of life. It sets out to be a message of friendship, and, hey, what do you know, it accomplishes that goal.)

We watched the show for years with my daughter, who is now 13, and I totally agree with this. Of all the shows I was forced to watch over the years SpongeBob was one of the most fun for us, the parents. I hope the show is good because I know I'm seeing it with her, she is very excited.

Well, here is a preview of the show. I'm not impressed so far, but the set is magnificent. That's going to be the only Tony for them.

Thank you for letting us know the sole Tony nomination this show will receive based on a three-minute video clip of rehearsal footage for an out-of-town run. I guess we shouldn't even bother inviting the nominating committee should this show ever come to Broadway.

Given that there are lots of shows who have yet to announce they're coming to Broadway in the next season, saying that any show has a Tony in the bag at this point is hasty speculation. Plus, of the shows that are announced, one is being designed by a MacArthur genius grant winner, so it's not like the show will have no competition.

I really think it's unfair to write this show off before the out-of-town tryout. Everything I've seen thus far appears to have been very well thought-out, and I'm hoping this surprises all of the naysayers.

LOL. You saw a clip from a preview presentation. I attended the entire preview presentation and it's clear you're more interested in being biased and jumping to conclusions than actually knowing anything about the show itself. I don't know if it looks like crap because I admit I haven't seen enough to reach that conclusion (though I've seen more than you). What I did learn from the team during their discussions on the creative side of the project and its development sounded quite intriguing and more than a "kiddie show". Even the little context they gave before the performance of each song helped to give some perspective and added to the charm of the songs.
Anyway, it sounds like you made your mind up at the announcement of the project and it really doesn't matter what they do. Clearly, you're not interested in being objective.

I was totally sold on everything in that video until the Spongebob voice by Ethan Slater. I really hope he doesn't stick with that voice, it's painfully annoying.

I'm seeing this on opening night in Chicago because I have pretty high hopes for this. It looks cute, and when you think about other shows that have been on Broadway (ie. Shrek the Musical), I don't see why everyone is so quick to judge.

I don't really see how this is ballsy. Clearly the creatives want you to still
imagine the leads as what they were on the show (a sponge, per say) but it's not like they're going to stick the guy in a giant square sponge costume. Have you SEEN any animated films-turned Broadway musical??? Theater is about suspending your disbelief and once again, someone is jumping to conclusions based off of a WAY-too-early design concept of the costumes.

Spongebob always has sounded painfully annoying so I think it fits pretty well.
As a rare person in my age group who did NOT grow up watching and loving this show I have no interest in the Spongebob musical. The production design dos look lovely though and I am very intrigued by the idea of populating the set with "found objects" as they put it that could have floated to the bottom of the ocean.

Count me in with those that have no interest - but I'm sure there's an audience for it. However, that set design is pretty awesome.
To those discounting the show based on one short clip -- lots of folks felt that way after the press preview for American Psycho -- and we know how many here ended up loving.
