This reminds me of the Dark Shadows movie this year. "Let's call it Dark Shadows, but change everything else!"

It's about a 7th grade class auditioning for a play about the food pyramid.

Honestly, this is an exciting project. I've always wondered what could have happened if Annie was a black girl. Would things turn out differently? Sounds cool to me. I just wish it wasn't Willow.

Yeah, I've sat up nights wondering the same thing.

I have to admit, it will be interesting to see a new portrayal. Emphasis on the word Interesting.

The casting of Warbucks will be interesting.

Why not just do a new musical for Willow?

I vote for Tyler Perry as "Madea" as "Miss Hannigan".

a lot of the criticism of this project has a really ugly undertone to me. not the "will smith forcing his children's weird vanity projects upon the world" criticisms-- those are totally justified. but i am seeing a lot of comments (not just on these boards) that boil down to "a BLACK annie??! with HIP-HOP music???? what's next, pimp daddy warbucks lololol". come on, guys.

i think jay-z's "hard knock life" is a brilliant work of postmodernism and this movie has equal potential to be great or terrible, and probably will be a little bit of both. either way, it'll be interesting. i'm kind of envisioning something along the lines of outkast's "idlewild" from a few years ago, which was far from perfect but did have some thrilling moments. full disclosure: i grew up watching the '82 version and it is still one of my #1 guilty pleasures, so the show in its original form is not exactly a sacred cow to me.

It is true, some of these comments are close to being offensive. A lot of these comments also make some good points.

If this is set in the 1930s a black Annie would not be adopted by a white billionaire. She would not even be chosen to go spend the weekend with him. A black billionaire would simply be anachronistic. The point can be made that in the TV remake Audra was black and we accepted it just fine.

If they change the period of the story then the (mostly) new score will work fine, but the screenplay may not adapt well to the time change. Do we even have orphanages anymore? I thought we were just embracing the poor foster care system these days. On the flip side, perhaps some great parallels can be made between the great depression and our current repression.

I think the biggest problem this movie will have is finding its audience. Most of the theatre people are out because of the changes. Most of the little girls are out because it isn't the Annie they know and love and have done on stage themselves. It may be going for a young black audience, but musicals aren't typically geared for that demographic. So who, other than Willow Smith, are they making this movie for?

There are many songs that I like in 'Annie', so I would be disappointed if many of my favorites are cut.

For some reason I can't stop thinking this is repetition after Polly.

Every time I read this thread title, I keep thinking ...

Dvorak's New World Symphony?

Beethoven's Fifth?

Mozart's Magic Flute?

You know, the classics.

Wow, there is some truly offensive stuff being written here. Somehow people think it's ok to say racist things in the name of verisimilitude. "A white billionaire would never have adopted a black child in 1933" - ok, if you say so, Grand Dragon.

WILL SMITH AS DADDY WARBUCKS.

You know it's gonna happen...

JV92, you're not trying to be colorblind at all. In fact you're doing the exact opposite.

I've said this before and am saying it again, this sounds like it could actually work.

There are definitely some hurdles they'd have to work out if this is going to work, being black isn't one of them. I'd say the biggest is integrity, one I'm going to be focused on if this ever gets released. Believe it or not, there are ways to infuse a piece with varying styles and still keep its integrity intact. It all depends on which elements are adapted, the purpose, and what they have to offer to an established piece so many people know.

If it's merely going to be something done on the basis of "shaking things up," they will succeed and the simpleminded who consider that to be synonymous with greatness will be entertained by something called "Annie" for just a little bit longer.

I think it would make more sense to set it in modern times and have Annie be a girl in a bad foster home. Miss Hannigan could be someone who signed up as a foster mother for the monthly stipend, but doesn't treat the kids well. And then they could use rap music and everything else they want.

I think updating the plot makes more sense than trying to shoehorn rap music and a black Annie into the original 1933 plotline.

Boredathome:

I'm sorry that you think I'm a racist. I'm all for equality. If I could go back in time and make some black people billionaires, I would. But because there was such bigotry towards blacks in 1930s America, there would be no black billionaires. And even if a white billionaire DID feel blacks should be treated the same as any race in 1933, he wouldn't adopt one. His lawyers, PR people, whatever, would advise him not to fearing it wouldn't look good for his image. Stupid, racist, awful- yes, I agree. But it would happen.

Get off your high horse and pick up a US social history book. I'm not full of SH*T.
Thank you.

Sincerely,
Grand Dragon

No F. D. R then, we've already seen two wonderful adaptions of the musical with the later actually doing justice to the piece. So I don't think another adaption is necessary. I do hope they do take a modern spin that would only make it worth it.

But we're talking about a musical. If you're willing suspension of disbelief is so weak that you can't handle a black child playing Annie, then I can't understand how you can handle people singing and dancing either. Get off YOUR high horse and realize that you're being racist. It's you, not the history books. We all know the history books, but this NOT REAL LIFE and isn't trying too hard to be, let's face it. So the bottom line is that you're just being willfully ignorant here. Which makes you a d-bag.

honestly, i find the plot of annie a little farfetched even when all the participants are white, but maybe that's just me.

at this stage, without having seen or heard anything yet, it's still way too early to say whether the concept will be executed successfully or not, but just because the impetus for this idea is ridiculous doesn't mean the idea itself is. i wonder if people would be responding differently if the concept and creative team were the same but they were looking for a talented unknown for the lead.
