? About The Temptations Musical

My mother and I are going to New York to see shows next month. I want to see Ink. In light of when one of the Tribeca Talks is on that Sunday, we need to see a shorter play or musical Sunday afternoon. I have already seen Come From Away and Network but am willing to see them again. She wants to see the Temptations' musical because one of her friends went to it and another has tickets. Those people suggested Hairspray, Kinky Boots, Dear Even Hanson, the Book of Mormon and Beautiful so she thinks that since she likes the other musicals, her friends are good at picking musicals.

The critics appear mixed about the Temptations' musical. The NY Times seemed to like it and Ben is viewed by many as the gold standard of if a show is good.

She really wants to see a musical and under no circumstances will I sit through The Prom, Mean Girls, Kink Kong, Frozen or Aladdin. We have also already seen Waitress, Phantom and The Lion King.

So here is the 64,000 questions: would people see the Temptations or rewatch either Network or Come From Away? I would rather see a quality show again than a mediocre one for the first time. Is Temptations a good show or just a mediocre musical?

There are several threads about "Ain't Too Proud", the actual name of the show. Look there.

I agree 100% with the assessment of Yiddish Fidler it’s just incredible. But I just saw Ain’t Too Proud and you won’t go wrong taking your mom to see that either. It’s great entertainment, and audiences are eating it up, with good reason

And take this for what it’s worth also. It’s great that you saw an iteration of The Temptations in concert but there are many interesting things about them that you might not know but will learn from seeing the show. And then there’s the music and the dancing.

I'd make Mom happy and see the show she wants to see. Two hours or so of sitting through Temptations music can't be all that bad (I've, too, seen them many times in concert when they used to travel through my local 'summer theater in the 80s). Buy her ticket, go and see it and wish her an early "Happy Mother's Day". You'll be happy you did.

Have you seen THE PROM (Or any of the shows you listed that YOU would not, under any circumstances, sit through?)

Why not let her choose what she wants to see? I would see THE PROM again over AIN'T TOO PROUD again.
