Raul Julia and Karen Akers used to annoy me on the cast recording of Nine. But I've gotten used to it.

While you're thinking people with shaky vibratos, the only one I can think of is probably whoever is on the recording of SMILE and plays the role of Robin (could be Anne Marie-Bobby). So horrible. Alison Fraser's wasn't very good either, because she only saved the vibrato for the short notes on "March of the Falsettos." That's what she used to sound like, but her vibrato now is very pleasant to listen to.
Who else? ALMOST EVERYBODY in the show "Two Gentlemen of Verona." Everyone was so shaky you'd swear there was a problem in the recording. Other shaky people include Michael Mandell, Colin Hanlon, Christine Andreas, Christina Applegate, and many others.
I was also thinking people with really slow and wide vibratos and stuff. I was thinking Anthony Newley, Chita Rivera (well now, she sounds like this, but in the beginning she was very pleasant), Christy Carlson Romano (I heard it in BatB, absolutely horrible), Carol Channing (now, she sounds like this), and others.
i agree with 98% of these!
it's not that we don't love them, we just wish they would give it a rest sometimes! RELAX!
oh and also.. not necessarily her vibratto, but her voice in general.. the current Cosette, Ali Ewoldt.. oh good lord. she is the whinest Cosette i have ever heard. it is rather unfortunate. ick. nice girl, but the voice, not so much.

Oh, I almost forgot...
Christopher Durang when he sings in "Putting it Together".
Nathan Lane, Nathan Lane, and Nathan Lane!!!!! Even his speaking voice drives me crazy....
Wow weird, because I really like some of the people's vibrato's mentioned. But I totally agree with Jodi Benson on the Crazy For You recording, I almost can't listen to it. I remember there was a discussion a while back how she did it on purpose but...why!!! Ugh.
Also, Raul Esparza's is very strange and fast, but actually I've grown to like it the more I hear it. And yeah, WAY better live. His voice is kind of funky on the tick...tick BOOM recording.
To the people who said they didn't like Adam Pascal's vibrato, what don't you like about it? I'm just curious because I've been told by a few people that my vibrato reminds them of his, and I'm wondering if maybe I can change/improve it.

I used to only be able to listen to Audra McDonald for awhile becuase she would grate on me. Its different now...but that was that.
skingdom out.
Justin Bond. I adore him, he's a genius and he cracks me up.. but that vibrato makes me want to kill myself a little.
I agree with the comments about Ali Ewoldt's voice. It really is a shame, because she seems like such a nice girl and the way she acts Cosette is adorable, but her voice makes me want to pull my ears out. It really is a shame. She and Adam Jacobs make one of the cutest onstage couples I've seen in my life, but none of them have brilliant voices.
Lea Salonga's vibrato also can get to me. If any of you remember the videos of her singing I Dreamed A Dream that surfaced in February or so, before she took over the role, you'll know what I mean. Her vibrato was so annoying in that video, I was regretting waiting to get tickets until after she had taken over the role. Thank god she wasn't like that in the real show.
Bebe Neuwirth.
Anyone seen the dvd of Jekyll and Hyde with David Hasselhoff?
Man, the Hoff's vibrato is the WORST!
Does anyone here own the recording of Is There Life After High School?? There's a bonus track at the end, with the composer Craig Carnelia singing a solo version of "There's a Kid Inside." Now I know he's not an actor, but his vibrato on that track drives me absolutely up the wall!!! He sounds like a cicada! Anyone who's heard it will know what I'm talking about.
Luckily he makes up for it by being a brilliant songwriter!

-Brent Barrett in his tenor days. It's much less strident now.
-Though I am a fan of these ladies and it doesn't always bother me, Betty Buckley (post-Sunset Blvd) and Julia Murney (Wild Party), and even the wonderful Raul Esparza can grate my nerves a bit. it really depends on the material and how forgiving I am of their interpretation. Do I just toss it up to "star quality" and an individual voice or does it just bother too much to listen to? Most of the time I will take "Thrilling" over "pretty" any day!

WILD PARTY was my first exposure to Julia Murney and I couldn't stand listening to her. I thought, "Who IS this chick?" From what I understand, though, she was experiencing some vocal problems at the time, so I'm a little more forgiving now. Her vibrato these days, while still very rapid, isn't as irritating as it used to be. I LOVED LOVED LOVED her in Wicked.
David Friedman on the live recording of LISTEN TO MY HEART. The rest of the cast is uniformly great, but David joins them on the opening track and it's, well....not pretty. He writes beautiful songs, but singing is definitely not his strongest suit.
Raul Esparza's can get on my nerves sometimes (although I am a big fan overall). Nathan Lane's drives me crazy.
I love Patti's vibrato, but the chin action is crazy.
stephanie j block
Ethel Merman did not have a vibrato in any of her singing prior to the 1965 revival of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, when it did become apparent. Most importantly, she had no vibrato when she recorded GYPSY in 1959. You may not like Merman's voice, but it's not because of any vibrato. And most people who don't like her voice have never heard her live. If you want a good example of excessive vibrato, listen to Jodi Benson on the CRAZY FOR YOU album, as others have already mentioned. That's vibrato!!!

Sandra Joseph!
Sarah Brightman. She. sounds. like. a chipmunk.
Julia's and Raul's used to annoy me but now I love them.
Adam Pascal has an amazing vibrato, especially when he uses a lot of power. The Rent soundtrack depressed me because he didn't sing as passionately as the cast recording. Yeah, it might've been overacting, but it sounded wonderful.
I'm so glad somebody else mentioned Betsey Joselyn. Her vibrato makes me want to jam pencils into my eardrums.
Julia Murney in a wild Party
drives me in sane!
