Posted: 11/14/04 at 11:32amhaha, I didn't even think of that in terms of the pants until you mentioned that, but that does very much add to the fun factor of those pants. I thought he looked just a bit silly, but very cute. I'd have been too frozen in place to jump the stage - I would've freaked out being like right under his nose. I freak out easily, though. He made eye contact with me once during Aida and I looked at my friend and said "Oh my God. What.. WHY did he just do that? No."

Posted: 11/14/04 at 12:50pmIts so nice to hear Adam was so gracious to his fans, hes learned alot, just wondering, did anyone on this thread meet him 96-97 while in Rent? He was awesome to me, but lets just say he couldn't handle the popularity of the show.

Posted: 11/14/04 at 12:52pmI didn't - I was pretty young back in those days, but I've heard a lot of stories... pretty crazy stuff. It's really obvious now that he's still not 100% comfortable with it, but he's gotten a lot better. He still gets a little bit weird when the crowd is big, but so long as it's not chaotic he handles it very well. I always love when there aren't a lot of people around; he's wonderful.

Posted: 11/14/04 at 1:05pmYea things got so bad that he eventually started running out the side door up 41st (that was towards the end of his run) and people were not happy saying things like "Viva La Diva". I met him at least 10-15 times and each time he talked and signed and would let you know where other cast members were if they didn't perform that night. And at Irving Plaza after seeing the Adam Pascal Band he gave me a big hug cos he knew me from being a rent head and i told him how proud i was of him.

lol - a lot of us poke fun about him being a "diva" a lot, but he really is so good... he puts up with a lot.
#131re: Adam!! :)
Posted: 11/14/04 at 2:02pmWell, when I think about it, getting freaked out by a large crowd of frenzied fans doesn't seem diva-esque at all. It's the ones who can't get enough adulation who are really the divas.

Posted: 11/14/04 at 2:07pmOh, no, no. That's not where the "diva" analogy came from. That's a long story - actually more of a very old joke. I don't at all put it past him that he freaks out. I'd be terrified.

It isn't a story, really - more just random incidents that TGIF and I had fun laughing at... like the traffic story. We always got a huge kick of of that... I don't think either of us knows why.

lol, they were all such random things that I don't even remember them. Well, like the day the Cabaret people said Adam wasn't coming out because they had to re-do his makeup... and the whole NY Post article - we just laughed it all off.
It doesn't really sound all that funny, I know. I guess you had to be there.

Even on the night of Adam's last performance of Rent he ran off crying, and I spoke to Anthony and he said he just doesn't know how to deal. The Diva comment back then was that he was too good for those that gave him noterity, especially on his last night, all the other OBC's on their last night spent a long time saying goodbye to their fans, what Adam pulled that last night was wrong, I don't care, be grateful because this play put you on the map and the fans put the play on the map. And no, it wasn't like a zoo of crazed insane people ready to jump the man. And its one night, he spent the past month prior running, that last night just say thank you. Anthony as always stood cooly in front of the Nederlander that night while Freddie made her rounds cos it was here last night also. And Freddie also known for not sticking around for autographs spent at least an hour or longer talking laughing and enjoying herself and her fans. If people get over Adam's looks I think they wouldn't be so easy to defend his actions in the past.
Now I had many good experiences with Adam and luckily he got to recognize me early on before he started freaking out.

Yes, but even though things can get kind of crazy now, I don't think it was anything like what it was then... and at that point, it was all completely new to him; I don't think - even though I wasn't there to see - that I could necessarily blame him for freaking out. And I don't just stand by that because I'm a huge fan, and I don't just say it because of his looks - he's proven himself to be *much* more than a pretty face and a nice ass. You can tell that he's still uncomfortable now at times, but he handles it well, for the most part. He's a lot more confident now, in general. You can also tell that when things aren't chaotic, he really *does* enjoy meeting his fans. No use harping on the past - and it's not his job to sign autographs. I've never complained when he didn't - he's a regular guy, and that's his prerogative.
edit - TGIF... LMAO. Amazing stuff.

Ignore. It.
After all, my own mother tells me he can't sing. I've learned to just plug my ears, grin, and bear it.

Posted: 11/14/04 at 3:44pmDon't get me wrong, all my interactions with Adam were GREAT he is a lovely man. I just never fawned over him, treated him like a normal joe and the whole autograph not being part of his job is somewhat true and somewhat not, PR is important for actors, you don't want to create a bad persona, its the life they choose they have to learn to deal with it and I'm very happy to hear he has learned to deal with it as I've heard Idina has also. So cheers to them both. In that last month, if he got caught I'd walk up to him and say "couldn't run out this time huh" and he would laugh and respond "i tried i really tried" and id laugh right back.

Posted: 11/14/04 at 3:56pmSo why do you think he's a diva if you've never had a bad experience? That lost me.

Right. I agree that it's important to do, but it's not required. I guess my perspective as a bit of a "standard fangirl" is kind of scewed, but as I've gotten older and learned to fawn a little bit less, you know, back off on the autographs, etc and just enjoy talking to him, it's easier to see things like that, and to recognize the fact that they ARE just regular people - in Adam's case, a regular person with a KILLER set of pipes. I've never seen him anything but sweet, if only a little bit timid, but if you're nice to him, he'll be nice right back. I guess that's what matters, after all. So, props to him, as always.
edit - insomniak, I don't know if ajay was saying that's his own opinion, or just saying that it's one that's, well... out there.

Thanks for clearing that up; I misread.
When during Rent did he run off crying? During the show? If you mean at the stagedoor, I'm not sure I can fault him for that. People were ridiculous.
Signing autographs is neither required nor an obligation on the actor's behalf. People who get to see them often seem to think it is, for some reason. If you get to meet them and get a signature, that's great, if not, you just weren't lucky that day. The show will go on, and that's what you're paying to see.
