I don't understand why it's an issue at all... his skin can be orange and it wouldn't matter!

I will not. This is a free country.
And if you had been privy to our conversation about Debbie Allen, and her sister, Phylicia Rashad, and the production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, then you might think otherwise.
She has no credibility.

re: African-America Phantom of The Opera?

^ Then I vote our next Phantom should be Ernie!

Rubber Duckie could be Christine, with Bert as the Phantom.

Well, based on your avatar, that comment is in character.
And I always thought that the theater was liberal and without racial bias. Silly me.

Well, if you'd see any of the multiple threads about race that she posted her thoughts on, you'd realize just how far off the mark you are.

I mean, really, what's the point of bumping this thread?

Phyllis, your avator is so appropriate.

Isn't it? I saw it on the Daily Show last night and it just made me laugh and laugh so I had to steal it.

And I always thought that the theater was liberal and without racial bias. Silly me

There is so much silliness in that statement it's not even funny.

I still find it hard to believe (and sad) that BFB is no longer with us.

I vaguely remember seeing Robert Guillame sing "Music of the Night" on television. Wasn't he with the production of POTO when he suffered a stroke?

No, his stroke was more than a decade later, while he was appearing in the TV series "Sports Night".

I just found out about her death the other day (apparently posts about it get deleted). I still don't understand why anyone bumps a thread to antagonize someone over a comment made half a year before, acting like these comments were made the day before.

As for BFB, she was a truly divine and wise poster, and her presence is greatly missed.

book!Phantom isn't white- he's a Turk, if I remember correctly. Only crawford!Phantom establishes him as white.

"book!Phantom isn't white- he's a Turk, if I remember correctly. Only crawford!Phantom establishes him as white."

The book does not establish his ethnic background at all. He's never mentioned as being a Turk.

According to the story, he lived in Persia for a time, but that was never implied to be his country of origin, either.

It doesn't matter what color the Phantom is. It's not as if he's a woman living with her fathers and brother on a farm confusing audiences 8 times a week at Studio 54.

The book says that Erik was born outside of Rouen (sp?), France. So that's where he's from.

If they go that route, I think Denyce Graves would be an excellent Christine.

And let's not forget Webber's blatant grab for publicity when he recently announced Michael Jackson's connection to Phantom. He used to be black. (Side note: The Jackson jukebox musical that is supposed to be holding up Thriller's Broadway bow is called M1: The Phantom and is supposedly a modernization of a very familiar story, nudge nudge. The creators are now trying to run it opposite Webber's disastrous sequel to steal his business.)

Wasn't it mentioned somewhere that Robert Guillame had a problem with heights and thats why he only hnad a short run?

As for a black Phantom, I guess I wouldnt mind, even though there is a line in the show about yellow parchment skin and all that, then again they are gossiping and you know how things get exagerated "a great black hole for a nose" and all that.

But does Norm have that range? I've only heard him sing a few times, he has a nice voice but it does not sound like he can go up that high, but like I said, I could be wrong, I have noe heard him sing much.

I like to think I am open minded, but I do have to take a double take sometimes with colour blind casting. I remember seing a poster in London with a black Javert (Norm did it, but there was a guy in London too, can't remember his name)

I dont read bios, so I always thought Patricia Phillips was Latino.

I'm so sad to hear about BigFatBlonde. I adored her.

And she was not in the slightest bit racist.

RIP, friend.

The Phantom only goes up to an A-flat. I've heard Norm go higher. I hope it happens!

blaxx and PJ-
It was around when I had finals, so early-mid May. If you unearth the Kitsch thread on the OT Board, it was locked the day after it happened.
