She was terrible in hairspray, and she only ever got laughs in the movie because her lines were funny...not her
plus, her singing voice is TERRIBLE
she was miscast in the movie
she is the only one I would say should NOT have been in the film

I think she's hot.

I didn't really like her before this movie, but was pleasantly surprised with her portrayal of Penny. She played the ultimate sidekick: wide-eyed, supportive, sweet and innocent. Sure, her voice isn't the best one of the cast, but I thought she did a wonderful job. I remember reading somewhere that Adam Shankman wanted her to "hold back" a little when she sang, because he felt that Penny was supposed to be in the process of "finding her voice" .
Of course, that could be completely made up, since I can't remember where I read that.

Has anyone noticed that A.B. looks A LOT like a young Heather Locklear? (Dynasty, T.J. Hooker, Melrose Place) from RC in Austin, Texas
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

She honestly turned in one of the top 3 performances in this movie...her acting was superb and her singing was good enough for me...Her facial expressions were PERFECT, and she delivered all of her lines perfectly...

She was the only part of the movie that didn't work for me. I thought she was terrible.

It is interesting to see how polarized people are on this topic. I rather enjoyed her performance. I didn't expect anything special from her, since she was not a lead, but I was pleasantly suprised. Her facial expressions were great. She had this dippy sort of look for most of the movie, but definitely grew up as her romance with Seaweed blossomed. She even lost the lollipop towards the end of the movie. I did think her makeup folks gave her a wee bit too much bronzer, especially towards the end of the movie.

I thought she was completely adorable, and did a fine job...
...but I didn't get her jungle tan! In a couple of scenes she looked almost as dark as Seaweed! I would have told her to avoid the sun (whether real or fake) for this movie. Unless she's supposed to have just flown in from Miami.

There was an interview done with her, Elijah Kelly, Brittany Snow by USA Today and they asked if she would do another movie musical and she said that she would like to do Jersey Boys as one of the females who falls for Frankie Valli. It's on the Jersey Boys Blog. I think she would be great as Lorraine, not so much Mary.

I thought Amanda Bynes was the worst part of the movie as well! To me it felt like she was trying to be pretty the whole time. She wasn't as nerdy as I think the part required..... plus she was a horrible singer! The rest of the movie was amazing. Nikki B. was my favorite along with the guy who played Seaweed......

Taboo,
I'm with you 100% with this...
especially about the whole... Allison Janney had few lines and practically stole the movie for some people... and clearly Amanda Bynes didn't.
I couldn't forget her after the movie cause I was so pissed that she did an awful job and couldn't sing...
and SERIOUSLY... WHY WAS SHE SO TAN? It's 1962 Baltimore... and she lives with a mother who locks her up all the time... I'm pretty sure Prudy would never allow Penny to be tan, it would be a sin or something.

I love what they did with Penny (and Prudy) in the movie. I think she played the part differently than it has been done before. This movie obviously went in a more realistic direction than it's predecessors.
Amanda played the part of a teenage girl and she seemed "authentic" while doing it. Everything she experienced in the film was new and she reacted the way a girl that age would have. This was not typical Amanda Bynes and I think it a nice testament to the range she has in her talent.
My only regret is not hearing her sing "Mama."
I’m a huge John Waters fan and I think this film goes above and beyond the expectations of what we would expect.
I think as a film it is fantastic. It entertains, and everyone in theater I saw it with loved it. What’s with all the hating? This is the first time in decades a good movie musical has been made. Yes there are cuts and stylistic changes, but it is a different medium. Understand that film does not work like the Broadway stage.

P.S.
I think her dress in the final scene was the most beautiful dress I've seen in ages. Stunning.

I like her too. She's a good actress and very funny.
I also like the fact that she doesn't seem to let fame get to her and become an excessive partier like other young stars her age.
I just wish she could sing as well as the stage actresses who did Penny though. Her voice was sweet, but not powerful or soulful enough, and a bit of a letdown.

Let's not kid ourselves Amanda Bynes is a terrible actress. There is nothing even slightly believable about any performance she has ever given (What I Like About You, Shes the Man) but somehow I think she always pulls it off. She is completely ridiculous, but very amusing and likeable. I see her as someone who doesnt try to be anything she's not, she embraces her ridiculousness. In Hairspray she had ver very few lines, but I thought she really stood out. She was cute and dopey, and did exactly what she does best. I think it worked.
Side Note: Did fake tanner even exist in the 60's? She looked like someone colored her with an orange highlighter. Rough.

"Amanda Bynes ruined my childhood. When she joined the cast of All That her annoying, annoying, annoying characters and inability to be funny ruined the show for me...and SNICK...and forced me to grow up and leave that behind. I'm still bitter about it."
lol! I miss the first seasons of All That...

There was "fake tan" lotion in the 1960's - Coppertone had a product called "Q.T." (quick tan).
The jingle:
YOU GET A QUICK TAN QITH Q.T.
A DOUBLE TAN, YOU SEE
IT TANS YOU ANY TIME
RAIN OR SHINE
WHEN YOU USE... Q.T.!
It pretty much made you orange.
Then, in the late 60's there was Aramis Skin Bronzer, which essentially was make-up for men.

I agree with Taboo123, add to that list Jennifer Gambatese of better performances. Isn't the character of Penny supposed to be sweet and dorky, have no idea of her sexual appeal, and a bit of a spas? That is until she gets the make over at the musical's end. Leslie Ann Powers, Kerry Butler, and Jennifer Gambatese nailed this all perfectly. Somebody on one of the other threads said they missed Kerry Butler, I thought about that for most of the movie. Her and Harvey F., and Divine of course
Then again, throw Dick Latessa into that mix.
