Wow. I disagree with a lot of the comments here. I love "Another Pyramid". I think "Like Father Like Son" just needs some new orchestrations. And I also think the book is pretty weak. The songs are definitely the saving grace. Not the book. Yikes.
I'm agreeing with CapnHook that I think this would make an interesting cartoon feature. I understand that the show has rather adult ideas; but when I first bought the CD it reminded me alot of The Prince of Egypt. Granted I've never seen the show, I only have the CD to base my opinion off of, so that could be why others are against the idea.
*Also, Fortune Favors the Brave is a song I play constantly and I'm not embarrassed to admit it!

I agree that this show already is great and has so much potential if worked with and changed a little bit....Agreed that Another Pyramid is kinda a pointless number and should be replaced with a new song perhaps.....I also think Disney should look into this to possibly make into an animated film...I love this show and hope that it does make it back to the stage for a longer run than it got before...

Another Pyramid isn't pointless -- listen to the lyrics. It's telling of an important piece of the plot and helps develop Zoser's character. It's poorly written, but that doesn't make it pointless.
The messenger was a song that happened after Aida and Radames were juged when I saw "Elaborate Lives" in Atlanta. The show was quite different at that time but still I loved that song and was very to find it on the "all star" album.
If you want to talk pointless - refer to the dance break WITHIN "Another Pyramid." Pointless and painful.
I actually liked that dance break very much and often watch it on making of DVD.

I listen to the CD 24/7 and I'm just saying it just feels as if it doesn't fit compared to the rest of the score, but then again I think it's the weakest song in the show....
Oh, sorry, mrcacou, I thought you were referring to something from the opera. I wish I had seen the "Elaborate Lives" version. What was so powerful about the ending? You've made me really curious.
"Painful" was Mickey Dolenz as Zoser. Oh GOD.
... there's a "making of" DVD?

Emcee - I just shared all three of those thoughts in your last post. LOL
Ditto.

I believe the making of DVD is of a foreign production and is not in English.
I really hope not. The current tour has enough problems!
They made a DVD of the Dutch version with the casting sessions and rehearsals. There were some great clips as well. I bought it at the theatre as I am an Aida junkie and saw it in many languages.
The messenger was very theatrical it was really telling us about death not being a separation for Aida and Radames.Deat is more a start than an ending. It sounded a lot like the version on the concept album. You should give it a try some of the lyrics are great (for a Frenchie at least).
No Mikey isn't, but the current tour Zoser is really mis cast though. The weakest link in the cast, IMO.

Haha, I saw Mickey Dolenz as Zoser! It WAS painful, but it doesn't help that he has the worst songs in the show.
I think that "The Gods Love Nubia" is the best moment of the show. It moved me a lot when I saw the show live. I will admit that I was crying like a baby by the end of the show.
I discovered AIDA by seeing the cast perform "Gods Love Nubia" on the Rosie O'Donnell Show. They all wore AIDA t-shirts and sang very powerfully.
I'm still shocked it wasn't nominated for BEST MUSICAL.

CATSNYrevival - I completely agree that the book is the weak part of the show. The songs are what save it, to me and with some re-working I believe a lot of the elements that are currently in the musical could benefit it even more. I'd love to see a revival sometime in the future.

I'm going to put myself out there and admit that I really like "Another Pyramid" - when I saw the show that was actually one of the songs that stuck in my head. I think that the lyrics are important, as in "Like Father Like Son"
If they did do a revival of this show, I would hope they would rethink the costumes. I just think the male characters' costumes look like something out of iron chef/miami vice. I mean I see what they are getting at, but I think they need to be reworked.
The fashion show sequence is a part that I thought was a little distracting, too
I've always had something of a love-hate relationship with this show. It was pretty ballsy of Elton to take this one, considering the opera is one of those warhorses that everyone loves... but he managed to pull it off with great style. The first go-around in Atlanta (of which Ive seen only photos) was disasterous enough to almost close it forever, but the reworking brought out the show's stronger points.
I dont have quite the issue with the men's costumes. If anything, they complement the style of the women's runway sequence. The whole show is just so wonderfully anachronistic.
I dunno about an animated version; my fear is that Disney would "disney-fy" it, rather than making it more adult a la Prince of Egypt or Sinbad. But it'd be fascinating to see what the team that created those movies would do with the material, and given that that animation shop is about to close down, I suppose anything right now is possible.
A revival on B'way? Not for a long time. AIDA is a good show, but there are far better ones waiting in line ahead of it.
>> Only some shows have done this. JEKYLL & HYDE is the only other one I can think of.
EVITA, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, CYRANO, and (I think) SUNSET BOULEVARD.

You know, you have three people working on the book, neither of which are the composer nor lyricist. Perhaps the show's biggest fault was the way they did their collaboration? Seems to me like that is what caused the problems. Are the problem areas in the show the result in compromises?
I don't know if you're talking about the book or the show, but didn't Adam say that essentially Elton would write the songs, give them to - I'm guessing the musical coordinator - and they would sort of edit them into workable musical numbers? But the collaboration process didn't really include Elton's working through the pieces with the rest of the cast and creative team to see what felt best for the production. So maybe the problems in the flow of the piece has to do with that?
i love this show.
i am a little partial to it, as this was the show that began my broadway obsession. not that i wasn't a fan before.. but i think you all know what i mean when i say obsession, haha.
but this show was really captivating when i saw it.
there is so much to love about aida. the sets, costumes, music were impeccable and not to mention the original cast, who were absolutely cast perfectly. i wouldn't change a thing.
so i certainly hope for a revival, with some changes of couse [i.e.- another pyramid.. great song, really cool.. though it isn't necessary.]
i think this show will continue to have a bright future. at least i hope so!
