I love Al Pacino. The Godfather? Fabulous. Scent of a woman? Magnificent. But on stage? Meh. I've seen in him Hughie, Salome and most recently in Glengarry Glen Ross. His on stage performances seem lack luster to me. Maybe I was expecting too much. But in GGR, I think Bobby Carnivale stole the show!
PS - Just thinking of this cause Scarface is on and I'm watching it for the first time!

He sure is. Best performance IMO - HBO's Angels in America.

Yeah, you're in the minority here. Did you see him in MERCHANT? Definitely not lackluster.
Bobby's last name is not Carnivale, no matter how many pitched tents he may inspire.

I saw him in Merchant. And thought his character in Glengarry was somewhat of a continuation...I think I'll pass next year
OTOH, I've now seen Bobby Cannavale with Chris Rock and Al Pacino. And made both of them look a helluva lot better. I'm not sure there's anyone on Broadway I respect more right now...

Actually, I think his Shylock was the most overrated performance of the season that year. For me, Lily Rabe walked away with that show.
Well I never saw him on stage, but there must be a universe of difference between that and his film work. His film work is the most opposite of lackluster that any human can give.
I agree that Lily Rabe was the highlight of that (wonderful) production of MERCHANT, but I thought Pacino was fantastic as well. I also liked his performance in GLENGARRY. But I know I'm in the minority there. He wasn't mind-blowingly magnificent, but I certainly didn't think he was horrible.
Lily Rabe being the highlight of something doesn't say much for the show she's in.
It's been a couple of decades, but Pacino was brilliant on stage in the 1983 revival of AMERICAN BUFFALO. So he at least used to know what to do live.
