It just occurred to me Alex Timbers and Moulin Rouge will be eligible for the Olivier Awards this upcoming spring, meaning it’ll be going head to head with Frozen. For those of you who may not remember, Timbers was originally attached as the director of Frozen before being let go in 2016. This should make for an interesting awards season over in London.

Alex Timbers recently won a Tony for directing his magnificent ''Moulin Rouge!,'' which garnered 10 Tonys altogether. His Melbourne ''Moulin Rouge!'' just opened in Australia, and the London version has kicked off its first preview. Timbers has a full plate, and I kinda doubt he's spent any time at all thinking about ''Frozen,'' let alone any sort of ''revenge.'' I bet Timbers ''let it go,'' back in 2016.

I recently saw the reworked Frozen in the West End and though I did not see the original Broadway staging the only really good thing about it it is the design. I'm not sure that has anything to do with the direction...
I doubt direction for Frozen is even on the awards radar.
Having seen Cabaret last night, I predict Rebecca Frecknall is going to walk away with it.
And grownups that have a flourishing career, don't really think much about those things - people get hired, they get fired sometimes, too. I'm sure he's completely over it.
Yup. Many actors have been fired even after they not we’re fitted for their costumes and even started filming. Bruce Willis was fired from Woody Allen’s CAFE SOCIETY the day after he started filming. Steve Carrell was quickly brought in to replace him. Eric Stolz was fired from BACK TO THE FUTURE several weeks into filming and replaced by Michael J. Fox. If things are not working, it’s best to quickly fix it. Both were professionals on both projects but things just weren’t working. This was the case with Timbers and FROZEN. His vision differed from what the producers were intending so he was fired. Happens all the time.
Of course I know people move on. Just trying to poke fun and stir the pot. Happy to hear Rebecca is a front runner for the award.
I would love to see his vision for Frozen and his ideas. I think Moulin Rouge! really cemented him as a first rate director. I've always loved his work - and have a soft spot for Rocky - but he's always had an interesting "downtown" feel to his shows. Like, how Rocky basically paused during the climax to get the audience on stage and build the ring.
Question, did Timber have a hand in the Melbourne production as well? I mean, I know he "directed" it, but did he ditch the West End production during previews and head down there? Or logistically how did that all work? Just curious if anyone knows. Glad he has a major hit on his hands and the show is really a feast for the eyes.
Don’t think he was ever there physically, but this photo seems to indicate he was there via zoom.

Timbers was well compensated for his time and received a hefty "exit package" -- so yeah, he's crying all the way to the bank.
