Thoughts? I know a lot of you are Ripley fans from N2N. She has a lovely voice, but I think I prefer Mazzie (and... Buckley) to this. It will be interesting to see her interpretation on stage.
Actually, after viewing this clip, I think Margaret Larson from New Day NW would make an excellent Margaret.

I think Alice sounds more like Buckley, and Mazzie in my point of view is the best singer out of the three. But I must say that although I'm no fan of Ripley, she sounds much better than I'd have thought and it seems she was born to play this role. She acts the songs fantastically too. And to add more praises to Alice Ripley, I found what she says in the interview totally on point and she is one of those actresses who really connects with the roles she plays. Wish I could see this.

Posted: 10/7/13 at 6:44pmI found that rendition particularly awful. Completely lacking in so many ways. Her voice still sounds shredded. I'm tired of the "Margaret as a person" angle. They are neglecting the source material in the worst way. They should just call this "Bullying: The Musical". Margaret is a monster.

Posted: 10/7/13 at 11:13pmThank you Betty Boy and Hope - I thought it was just me and perhaps my sinus infection affected my hearing. I like Alice Ripley and always loved this song (especially sung by betty buckley) so I was excited to see a clip of it. And as soon as she started singing I thought "wow - is she out of tune?"

I for one love that the revised Carrie makes the characters more human. I'm still haunted by Marin Mazzie's performance because she made me see inside Margaret's twisted mind and experience the pain of believing that the only way to save your child is to kill her. Margaret's actions certainly were evil, but I think she was just batsh*t insane. Wish I were able to see Alice Ripley's take on the role.

Posted: 10/8/13 at 12:50amThat was always there. For Christ's sake, she announces she will kill her daughter in When There's No One. That's not foreshadowing, that's an action plan. To pretend the revisal opened up uncharted psychological turf is BS, Betty Buckley's characters don't bat an eye without BB knowing the exact psychology of that millisecond.

Posted: 10/8/13 at 5:30amNamo, I didn't say it was foreshadowing. I know the story. I only meant that Marin's portrayal made me feel for Margaret for the first time because her portrayal was more layered than I'd seen before. The revisal still has a lot of problems, but I do like it better than original because it tries to bring out the human aspect.

I enjoy Alice Ripley as a performer, and I enjoy this performance. I would love to see her in the role. There is something about her uncomfortable, piercing voice that adds something to the song (sadness?) - similar to N2N. I can't wait to hear clips of her EVE WAS WEAK!
However, this performance just reinforces my idea that Marin was perfectly cast in the revival of CARRIE. I cannot think of anyone who has the combination vocal ability and acting skills to do what she did, except maybe Carolee Carmello. An effortless, legit soprano that perfectly captured the religious aspect of the character, which then could transform into a belting, raging powerhouse.

Posted: 10/8/13 at 7:56amI cant believe how off-key and nasal she is now...really did not like this at all. Betty Buckley is Margaret White...Marin was good but to me she sounded like a great singer singing a show tune...the songs sound scarily religious coming from Buckley and other worldly which they need to sound and they don't from Alice at all or from Marin

Okay, that made me laugh a lot.

Posted: 10/8/13 at 12:06pmDespite the pitch issues, she sounds much better than she has in years. I wish I could see her in this, she would have been my dream Margaret for the off-Broadway revival. I wasn't a huge fan of the way that Marin Mazzie played the role; she sang beautifully but I wanted her to go further than she did. I hope they release Alice singing "Eve Was Weak" at some point.
