Ever see one of those performances you know will stay with you forever? Ever walk out of a show not only knowing you've seen something remarkable but also wondering how it could possibly happen again, not to mention 7 more times this week? Marin Mazzie has not only taken over the role of Diana in this show but has also completely erased any memory of her predecessor. Standing up and leaving after the matinee today, I couldn't imagine how she was going to step on that stage and put herself through that again in only a few hours, it is completely unfathomable to me.
Jason Danieley as well is simply remarkable in this. I will agree with people who've said he seems "smaller" than anyone else has in the role but I LOVE that about him in this part. Dan is lost in a way, and it comes across brilliantly here. And if his "I Am The One" reprise doesn't rip your heart out of your chest, chew it up and spit it back out onto the floor before stomping on it, than you have no heart. It was simply devastating.
THIS is why a replacement Tony award needs to be instituted. If you want to see what acting really is, what a human being is physically and mentally able to put themselves through for their craft, than it's worth seeing again or for the first time. While the show itself still isn't my favorite, that performance will go on my mantle as one of the finest I've ever seen.
