Alice Who?

Ever see one of those performances you know will stay with you forever? Ever walk out of a show not only knowing you've seen something remarkable but also wondering how it could possibly happen again, not to mention 7 more times this week? Marin Mazzie has not only taken over the role of Diana in this show but has also completely erased any memory of her predecessor. Standing up and leaving after the matinee today, I couldn't imagine how she was going to step on that stage and put herself through that again in only a few hours, it is completely unfathomable to me.
Jason Danieley as well is simply remarkable in this. I will agree with people who've said he seems "smaller" than anyone else has in the role but I LOVE that about him in this part. Dan is lost in a way, and it comes across brilliantly here. And if his "I Am The One" reprise doesn't rip your heart out of your chest, chew it up and spit it back out onto the floor before stomping on it, than you have no heart. It was simply devastating.
THIS is why a replacement Tony award needs to be instituted. If you want to see what acting really is, what a human being is physically and mentally able to put themselves through for their craft, than it's worth seeing again or for the first time. While the show itself still isn't my favorite, that performance will go on my mantle as one of the finest I've ever seen.

Posted: 8/7/10 at 8:35pmReading these great reviews of Marin and Jason makes me feel like I truly won't be able to wait until I see this again. How is Kyle Dean doing with both of them? Also, are you one of the lucky ones who got to hear Kyle Dean's experimental high note at the end of I'm Alive? Would kill to hear it. I totally agree 100% about the replacement Tony. It's not just the originals who can truly deliver.

Posted: 8/7/10 at 8:37pmKyle did do a high note today. I didn't even think about it being new but it sounded great. This entire cast together is phenomenal.

Posted: 8/7/10 at 8:44pmI unfortunately have to disagree. Mazzie is fine enough, I suppose, but the entire performance feels very calculated to me. I didn't get a shred of honesty in it. She doesn't have near the raw emotion that either her predecessor or the phenomenal Jessica Phillips (who deserved to assume this role full-time) brought to it.

Posted: 8/7/10 at 8:47pmWell adamgreer, I consider that a form of hate speech and it is unacceptable around me.

Posted: 8/7/10 at 8:49pmMaybe I should start a facebook group to "Give Diana back to the crazies!", along the lines of that lovely group Hunter and Cuddles set up.

Posted: 8/7/10 at 8:54pmThe thing is, I'd be frightened at some of the people who would seriously join the group.

Posted: 8/7/10 at 10:08pmKyle Dean's high note isn't really experimental; they've actually just changed the note, from what I've heard. But either way, I'm looking forward to seeing this again, mainly for Marin Mazzie. I've loved her in almost everything I've seen her do, so I have no doubt that I won't be disappointed.

Posted: 8/8/10 at 11:50amHave to agree with adamgreer...as I posted on another thread...saw the show Friday and was very disappointed, especially with Jason. Will wait for Alice to go on tour to see this again.

Posted: 8/8/10 at 6:08pmI third you Jordan! I saw it last week and honestly haven't been that moved by the show since the first time I saw it at Second Stage. And even that paled in comparison to what I felt this week!

Posted: 8/8/10 at 6:33pmMmmm...all this debate has lit my fire to revisit this to see Marin and Jason. I loved the show when I saw it at the Arena in VA, but was rather nonplussed when I saw it about a month ago (Alice just really didn't do it for me that time around). Can't wait to see it on Tuesday.
