Got a tip today from a producer pal (same one that gave me the nice scoop on Its Only A Play) that American Psycho will start previews in mid February 2016 at a TBA Shubert theatre with opening set for late March 2016.
The cast thats doing the workshop right now are all expected to be in the Broadway company.
I'd say this would be good in the Jacobs.

I think it's going to be a harder sell than they think it will be.
Any idea why they are waiting a year? I remember it being rumored as this Fall. I'm not saying that you're wrong, but why the wait?

They know that the shows subject matter is unique and maybe difficult to sell, so they would rather spend the time doing workshops and refining it and get it up in the spring instead of in the fall where the slow months could potentially derail it, i was as shocked as you but he said yep 2016 and I said, i thought it was coming in the fall? Of course this all could change but this is the plan as it stands right now.
I agree, odd they are waiting a year, but I am very excited about this project. Hoping it does well!

Not at all surprising that they're steering clear of fall, given how the fall openings this season have done.
We keep stepping closer and closer to musicals only premiering in the spring. I can understand that given history.
As for the piece? Very excited.
The answer to why 2016 is very simple guys.
Rupert Goold is booked until late 2015.
Kind of hard to rehearse the show without it's director.

Know a friend who saw the workshop and said it was "dazzling" and that Ben Walker would emerge as a major star. Also loved Zosia Mamet, who is so wonderful in "Girls". She said that Duncan Sheik's score was as good as his work on "Spring Awakening". Now that's dazzling.

I haven't read the book or seen the movie but my sense of things is that the book wasn't the best source material to adapt and the movie is difficult to adapt in part because of handling the fantasy/reality element and the tone. I don't think it's the sex and death they'll struggle with because what would theatre be without those two topics? I guess it'll just depend on the material. Assassins and Sweeney Todd. It can be done.
I would hope that the TBA Shubert Theater isn't too big though as I can't see this playing to a packed house every night if they get a huge theater. And it'll need glowing reviews and great word of mouth.
It's a very well-done musical and I hope they don't change too much, but it's not a totally easy sell. As funny as it is, it also brings back a lot of the nauseous surrealism of the book. It's also got this almost Beckett-like existentialist bent that doesn't exactly pull in the tourists.
Vintage Snarker:
Perhaps if you haven't read the book, seen the London production, or even seen the movie, could it be that your browsing of a Wikipedia article doesn't really give you sense of anything about the property?
The, as you put it, fantasy/reality element is the question of the whole property, not a device or convention. Whether Bateman killed hundreds doesn't matter, the final moments of the book, movie, show turn the mirror on the audience/reader to decide if it affects anything one way or the other.
If I may:
Don't post such ignorance.

An audition notice makes it more official, but until it actually starts performances nothing is set in stone. There have been shows that have been cast and contracted and end up being delayed or outright canceled before rehearsal starts, or even during rehearsals.

Oh no I know you didn't, and I agree it would be perfect for the Jacobs, I just know that the Jacobs is promised to The Color Purple which is unfortunate for Psycho.
Lin manuel, sarah barellis, andrew lloyd webber, duncan sheik, the allegiance guys, good music
The actual Shubert theater might be free by then if Matilda doesn't stick around much longer. If not, maybe the Belasco or the Imperial??

I could see this going in the Schoenfeld after China Doll, this is a show that needs a theater with only two levels of seating, anything with a balcony is going to be too big and the intimacy will be lost.

I really hope this does well as the London production was fab. I went in thinking 'how on earth are they going to adapt this?' and admittedly i came out thinking 'what on earth did i just watch?' but in a good way. I loved the songs, some of which really help along the show and some are just odd and funny, but i adored them all. Im sure there are recordings of them somewhere online i think.
I hope they dont change too much from the London version. If they dont, i may have to make a trip to go see it again!

Duncan is adding several songs and taking out several other as far as I'm aware.
