And Jews should never play Christian characters, if they look "too Jewish" perhaps?
What's "normally done"? I never thought I'd see that phrase on THIS site. HA. Sounds like Palin's response to marraige equality.
Hahaha Sue. Get back to me when you can assure me that yellowface isn't going to happen again and when Asian American performers don't need to create opportunities for themselves because so few currently exist.
Yes, Phyllis, the concept seems to be racist unless its an all Caucasian cast.

Hello, Dolly! doesn't have any specific commentary on race. Or anything, really. It's a fun farce with a helping of sentimentality.
Thank you Kad! We are talking "Hello Dolly!" after all.
And, Michael Bennett: perhaps the NAACP just say Merrick as an opportunistic huckster out to make a buck, and not actually trying to do something to progress the employment opportnities of African Americans. Maybe.
I wish i wouldve seen similar concern over all the Pope and Catholic bashing a couple of weeks back
Do you really not see how this is a false equivalency?
Explain to me how being born of a specific ethnicity is the same as choosing an ideology.
bashing someone solely on who they are and what they believe in is wrong in my humble opinion. black, white, straight, gay, catholic, muslim, jew, its WRONG and BIGGOTED
its funny those who bash catholics ignore all the charity work the church does, for a long time the sole HIV health providers.
they also wouldnt dare bash muslims who actually kill homosexuals and women who cheat on their husbands, or dare to show some bare ankle. perhaps after hearing what happened to that cartoonist they know better.
>> "its funny those who bash catholics ignore all the charity work the church does, for a long time the sole HIV providers."
I'm sure that sounded really good in your head, but did you take the time to look at it in print?
Also, did you miss the "Protecting God's Children" training that was mandatory (and still is) for Catholic school educators and employees, after the abuse claims went public? How can you NOT see how homophobic that training is?
For Heaven's sake (and I mean that literally...) stay on topic and leave the Catholics out of this. You're not doing anyone any favors.

>> "This fully-staged fully-costumed presentation..."
Since it's only two performances, I gather that means something akin to the productions at the Philharmonic. Staged and costumes, but only propped, not fully set.
Sit down, John. Sue isn't worth engaging.

Message received. I'm still new here, and in the learning process. Thanks for the advice, Kad! :)

yeah I'm still not understanding why this thread is even talking about religion... and i've read through it a couple times
and i don't understand how an all asian show is racist?? it's not like they're saying "we're a better race" which is basically the definition of racism...
as hokey as it sounds... if you seriously have a problem with an all non-white version of a show being done then you gotta' look at your own racists/discriminatory/prejudice feelings to figure out why this bothers you even a little
Hey, guys. I heard there was an all-Asian production of Hello, Dolly! coming up.
Anyway, back to topic. Last year they did an all-Asian Carousel and the pictures of the production look beautiful. I'm sure this will be great as well. With all the panels and studies being conducted about how Asians are the least represented minority on Broadway and beyond in terms of working actors and roles available, I see nothing wrong with organizations like this that showcase Asian talent. Let them show how talented Asian performers are and prove that they don't need to be pigeonholed into Asian-specific roles. Why wouldn't there be an Asian matchmaker pairing up her Asian friends? It makes sense even in terms of Asian culture. I think this is the perfect show for this talent pool. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to create job opportunities for yourself where none or very little exist, which seems to be one of the goals of NAAP.
Well said, MrMusic.
Can we go back to arguing Patti vs. Bernie?
its funny those who bash catholics ignore all the charity work the church does, for a long time the sole HIV providers.
What's funnier is that those who bash Catholics are invariably former Catholics.
I want an all-Morman production of Fiddler on the Roof, and all-Jewish production of The Wiz, and an all-black production of The Sound of Music.
Bring on the "alls!"
John I obviously i meant the sole organization that at one time cared for hiv and aids patients. Im not particularly religous but believe in givingcredit where credit idle due. to the evil church! Also be careful as y ou may soon run afoul of KADS infamously strict PC code....like capitalism!
An all-Asian staff of dancing waiters at the Harmonia Gardens?? I already got my ticket!

THIS! I don't mind shows getting cast this way if race is not integral to the story. However, I wouldn't like it if it was a show like Ragtime, Scottsboro Boys or Miss Saigon where ethnicity matters.
If you ever want to have your mind wrapped around a brick and thrown out the window, check out YouTube for some of the Japanese, all-female productions of big time musicals. Extravagant, waaaaaaay over the top, and yet gorgeously produced, they are unbelievably opulent.

This production sounds downright pedestrian by comparison.

I don't think it's all that funny. At least they know from which they speak.
When are we going to get an all white version of FLOWER DRUM SONG?

"Im not particularly religous but believe in givingcredit where credit idle due. to the evil church! "
You mean the church that could have helped slow the spread of the disease if they would stop telling people that condoms are bad, no ifs, ands, or buts? Is that what you want to give them credit for?
I'm not a very religious person, nor I'm a blind Christian, but it's not fair to question the faith of millions of Catholics around the world just because of the actions of a small elite portion of its people.
Not fair? Who is supporting that "small elite"?
With all due respect, all that jazz, I didn't question anyone's faith per se. I do question the value of BLIND faith untempered by reason, but that has nothing to do with doubting anyone's sincerity. (And to be clear once again: I have my own non-rational beliefs, but I do recognize that faith and reason are not the same functions.)
I don't mind admitting that I love the Catholic mass and have attended semi-regularly throughout my adulthood. (I was raised in an evangelical denomination.)
But put a penny in the collection box? How can anyone do so in good conscience (except for those collections that are very rigidly devoted to one of the many good causes the Church supports)?
The issue raised by Sue, however, was whether criticism of a religious belief was analogous to racism, sexism or homophobia? The answer is still "No." The former is a choice and deserves criticism, not all the time but when it is harmful. The other prejudices are based on immutable characteristics.

ETA, all that jazz, I want to be clear that I don't condemn Catholics as a whole and I certainly don't exclude them from my circle of friends. I recognize that many are working to change the Church from within and I wish them nothing but success.
My point was really directed at sue's claim that criticizing the Church was somehow akin to racism. It may be to a few people, but to most of us, we condemn the Church hierarchy because of its actions, not because it is Catholic.
