To "urbanize" the play, a good chunk of the dialogue would have to be altered. Then again, the translation is so scatter shot that even for white American actors, the dialogue should be altered.
Who the hell knows what clafoutis is? And how often do we use the expression "it made such a god-awful racket?"

Who said anything about "urbanizing" the play, Yankee? All anyone talked about was casting black actors, not making the play "urban".
Racist.

It takes a lot to offend me. More than most people would imagine but the above statement did the trick. What is it that's not urban enough? The fact one of the characters works in wealth management? Because we all know how she couldn't do that if she was black? She should be, what, a janitor? Or maybe a safe Claire Huxtable lawyer is ok with you.
I'm guessing the play should now be set in Harlem to make it believable as well and we should try to make it as much like Precious' apartment as possible so white people who stumble unknowingly into the theater won't feel so threatened.
And which one of the husbands should now be a rapper? There really is a lot to consider before casting "them".

I'm sorry that you all interpreted my statement the wrong way. What I merely meant was that the translation of the script is so scatter shot that I had a hard time believing that these characters are human, let alone American, let alone any particular color.
What's wrong with setting it in Queens? It doesn't need to be set in Brooklyn for it to be believable that they're rich people of any color. What's wrong with calling it "pie" rather than "clafoutis?" What's wrong with saying "It made such a god-awful noise?"

Posted: 4/3/10 at 9:05pmi didn't read the thread, and am sure this has gotten unnecessarily hot button, but this show would be 100x more of a riot with an all-male/all-female cast.

Posted: 4/3/10 at 11:01pmI think an all Black cast can work for this play but erm... is there ANY chance that Wicked not come into any discussion =_=
