Whenever you go to a theatre (any one, it really doesn't matter), does it ever feel like home to you? I've been noticing this feeling whenever I went to see a show in the past year so far. Does any one else feel this way whenever they're sitting in a theatre, waiting for a show to start? I know it sounds stupid, but I just want to know if anyone else feels this way.

Absolutely not! I think almost everyone here will agree with you. The lights, the anticipation, that great theatre *smell*...it's wonderful, and when I'm experiencing it I never want to be anywhere else. I've only just recently begun dragging my ass down to the city to see shows with any frequency, and I already feel more at home in a Broadway house than I do in many other places.

I remember when I was with my friend and she and I went to the city together, we left Grand Central Station and the first thing she said was "I'm home!!" The more I felt about it, the more I felt the same way. I just always feel good going into New York City knowing that I'm going to see a Broadway show. *Resists urge to quote Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone*

Of course! Thats why we're here, isn't it? Immediately when I walk into the theater it's like I was always meant to be a part of it...not just onstage, but just in the theater world in general. I think thats why it feels like home.

haha. I was holding back too.

All the time. I feel most at home on the stage of that theatre.

A sense of freedom comes over me whenever I walk through Shubert Alley in the early morning. The stress of the real world disappears.

Yes, I feel right at home too. Sitting in a theater is probably the most comfortable place for me to be...no matter how bad the show is. When I am in the theater, I am completely stress free and not worrying about any problems in my life...no wonder I go to the theater so often!

Thanks so much for starting this thread, Piazzaslight. I know I'm not alone. re: Anybody else feel right at home in a theatre?

I agree completely. There's magic in every theatre, whether it be on Broadway or a crappy little fifty-seater in the middle of nowhere. You'll always find a little bit of magic.

I feel like I could move in. But being in the theater has always had such a homy felling to it. I love it.

I feel terribly awkard when I'm in a theater. I KNOW the actors are staring at me from behind the curtain and they're making fun of whatever I'm wearing. I've felt this way since 1963 and it hasn't gotten any better.

No matter how at home we feel though, we shouldn't take out our Haagen Dazs ice cream and eat it right out of the pint (like some a$$hole did the last time I saw Sweeney Todd).

I completely agree with you. A theatre has become one of my favorite places. They're like secret hideouts. You look at the outside of a theatre, and you wouldn't think that something so magnificant is inside. I love everything about theatres. Right down to the sound the ticket scanner makes.

Do you know what I've noticed. My posture. I'm always amazed at how straight up I sit. I loved the 'sacred space' comment - I get it too. I've never worn shorts, or flip flops. In fact, I generally dress semi-formal. And Dolly, I bet you always look fabulous.

Oh, yes yes yes. Every time I just walk into our school auditorium, I just breathe a sigh of.. I don't even know. Theatres are honestly the most magical places in the world.

I totally understand: I feel at home in the theatre. Walking in Shubert Alley in the early morning like Yankeefan007 says or on 44th at 10:30 after seeing PHANTOM for the umpteeneth time, I am HOME...It is Heaven on Earth being in a theatre- especially on Broadway.

I feel at home here on the board, too. People understand me and know what I know and care as much as I care and let me be me and like me (I hope) re: Anybody else feel right at home in a theatre?

I like all of you *hugs* THANK YOU for being my friends.

that great theatre *smell*

You like that smell, too, SDav? I do too, haha! Some people think I'm a little touched in the head for identifying the smell of theaters. But it's just a memory-jogger, you know? Then if I ever smell a scent similar to the smell of the theater I get very nostalgic. Or it could be the smell of a new shampoo I used the day of a show. It's just one of them human brain deals that I find myself very amused with.

As for the main question? A resounding YES. I'm most attatched to the Philadelphia Academy of Music, especially since it's such a big part of my family. I get the most amazing feeling when I walk into those doors. But all theaters have the craziest aura about them... like a simple box on Christmas morning, unwrapped, amd inside is the best gift you've ever received. Pretty crappy metaphor, but I guess it gets the point across... that theaters could look like any plain old room, but it's that performance, that other world, that makes it special. :)

The theatre is like my sanctuary. Walking into one it's almost as if they scream out "WELCOME HOME" to you. It's like a sense of comfort when you sit in the seat and inhale its "theatre smell" like mentioned before. For me, the Majestic theatre is my favorite. The velvet-like seats, beautiful architecture surrounding me, and of course that distinct smell of the theatre. They've become my "special place." My friends like the mall and whatnot, but, I opt for something else.

I also love the feeling of walking into the actual auditorium. Like, walking to my seat. There in front of me are the extravagant gilded walls and I just feel all tingly inside hehe

Oooh, I didn't even remember walking around the theatre district in NYC! So this one is a little more specific (although I do get excited walking past any theatre no matter what city I'm in), but it does feel so good. I took a course at a university downtown this summer, and when work got crazy I'd end my day by taking the subway up to Times Square and just walking around--walking past the theatres, checking out the stage doors...not even with a specific purpose other than to be there. And (even I think I'm a little crazy to say this) no matter how bad the crowds got--these were the insane summer tourist crowds, remember--and no matter how difficult it was just to walk down the street, I didn't want to leave. It's such a great feeling knowing that you're walking down the streets where magic happens and where fellow theatre geeks (like you fine people) feel just as at home as you do.

And yes, it's a wonderful feeling after an evening show especially...walking out of the Imperial last night, breathing in the night air, seeing all the lights, walking with crowds of people all carrying new Playbills...God, it sounds so corny, but it just made me so damn happy to be a theatre lover.

i like this thread.

I must say i feel slightly differently. When i go to a theatre, i feel more like i'm visiting a very good friend that i haven't seen in a long time. Because when you think about it, the theatre is home to the actors' characters. I feel like i'm visiting the actors' characters and the actors themselves. I got through these feelings of euphoria when i'm in a theatre. pulsations, warm sensations, gittyness, the whole 9 yards. When i'm an actor and have a theatre to go to everyday then i will feel at home. And when a show closes, it'll be like i'm moving.

When you hear the orchestra tuning up their instruments, when the bell rings, when the hush falls over the audience, when the lights dim...and then when the curtain rises ( or whatever the equivalent of it these days) -

Ahhhh - nothing can beat that moment!

I love that ticket scanner, too.
When I sit there, not only does it feel homey, it feels like somewhere that I just KNOW I want to be, and be involved in for the rest of my life.
Plus, thsoe seats are so damn comfy!

There are many days that the theatre feels like home more than my actual dwellings. I mean it sorta depends, but the theatre is definitely my home!
